Thinking Think GIF by Rodney Dangerfield

I've always thought the BCS program did a pretty good job and it has more objectivity, or at least transparency, than what we get with the CFP committee. I don't agree with it completely but I would rather it be used than anything else I know of.

The UT Athletic Director seems to like the BCS program over the current process as well.

"With respect to this process," White said Tuesday during an appearance on SportsTalk on 99.1-FM The Sports Animal, "I would like to see us a little more objective. I don't think there is anything wrong with the ranking system of the old BCS.

I'd love to say I trust a computer model over human selection committees but, someone had to write that code. So hard to avoid bias. Maybe we train an AI model with data from all teams' message boards. Even out the bias and hate across the board by using the same number of posts from each site. Next have the model look at the criteria the committee selected and seed accordingly. There will still be bias but it will be minimized. Finally, guard that model like it's Fort freaking Knox :)

Actually the BCS did utilize human input by incorporating the AP and Coaches polls.

The primary purpose of the BCS was to determine the top two teams, not the 12th best team. I'm not sure they'd have used the same formula for that purpose.

Yeah it would have to be different but the formula is already there. Committee lists out what their criteria are. SOS has to be rethought in a BIG way though. Also, auto conf champ seeding is trash. Throws SOS into a tailspin

It did. Could incorporate that as well but take the committee nonsense out. The number of voters alone would cause the data to normalize. You'd still have bias to varying degrees but at least it wouldn't be a handful of folks in a room making decisions behind closed doors.

The thing about SOS that bothered me is by winning games you decrease your SOS, especially if you're handing a team its second or third loss. The only way you can beat a top 25 team and have an SOS that reflects the win as a TOP 25, is if they're ranked high enough to absorb the loss. It also doesn't take into account situations like injuries. Take NC state as an example. They were ranked in the top 25 when UT beat them, but the next game they lose their starter for the season and have to start a true freshman at QB for the rest of the year. Were they better when UT played them than they are now? Probably but I doubt that's reflected in SOS.

Agree. I'm not saying I have the solution to SOS but it needs to adapt from its current form. You'd imagine a good quality AI model that's fed all the stats could come up with something a bit easier to swallow than what we have now.

Stuff like this is why you see so many pushing for the SEC to break off and form a new league. Hard to be objective when you have SOOO many teams to consider without common opponents.

The top 2 schools this year would be Oregon and Texas, if this was pre playoff era.
Ive not seen Oregon play at all and I have only watched one Texas game. Based on pure stats I tend to agree with you. They looked posed to take it all unless they run into something along the climb that happened with OSU at the michigan game where they just misteped

If notre dame plays bama and note dame wins….. I'll pee on myself from laughing so hard.
That's the thing about Alabama making the playoffs. I hope they make it but it won't be a good look if they 💩 the bed on the first game. If they go to Citrus bowl and win I think there would be more positivity about the program.

I said on Volquest that the commissioners need to get together and agree on which metrics they want to use & how to weigh them then use that data for a new BCS (CFPC?) to rank each week. And get rid of these byes for conference champs. Top 4 spots, that's it.

Here are the final rankings from a simulate BCS computer model. I'm always interested in how BCS model compares to final CFP committee. As expected, they are pretty close:

BCS:

1. Oregon
2. Georgia
3. Notre Dame
4. Texas
5. Ohio State
6. Penn State
7. Tennessee
8. Indiana
9. Boise State
10. Arizona State
11. Alabama
12. SMU

College Football Playoff:

1. Oregon
2. Georgia
3. Texas
4. Penn State
5. Notre Dame
6. Ohio State
7. Tennessee
8. Indiana
9. Boise State
10. SMU
11. Alabama
12. Arizona State

I agree. Looking at the top 12 this year you have a strong argument for 6 or 7 teams that have no business even sniffing at the playoffs. Some bottom feeder manages to get lucky and bust a bracket early and knock out a potential key team like Texas or OSU that has a legitimate run at it or they manage to injure a key player (s) on that team potentially hurting their chances at survival in the remaining brackets.

I do think the cream rises to the top but as we saw with the michigan V OSU game there is the potential for a upset.

We were fine with the top 4 spots and the invite system. This 12 team garbage is exactly that . Garbage.

We went from 2 to 4 because arguments that #3 deserved a shot. We went from 4 to 12 because arguments #5 deserved a shot. When evaluating any "injustice" from arguments that #13 deserved a shot, it would probably be prudent to remember why we expanded to 12 teams, which is to not include teams that claim they deserved a shot at the playoff, but to include teams that deserved a shot at the title. In that regard, I think the 12 team playoff has achieved that purpose. There aren't any teams left out that deserve a shot at the title because they've gone deep enough to include teams that have no business being there.

If you really think about it the playoffs start at the kickoff of each teams first game. Win those and don't have any stupid losses and your good.
