Head shots..

I once shot a doe in the head with an arrow (and killed her instantly). I was aiming for her lungs. Have I ever mentioned I gave up bow-hunting because I'm a terrible shot with a bow?

I don't necessarily disagree with what you say and would never advocate for headshots on deer.

But at the same time, I have killed countless pigs with a 22mag by shooting them in the ear.

Perhaps we value the critter's lives differently.

How far were you from said pigs? What happened if you miss your mark, on the pig in a pen? That's probably the biggest issue here. You screw up on a deer and it runs off and you probably won't catch up to it end the misery.

Who all here are confident enough in their ability to shoot deer in the head to keep from ruining meat? I know several marksmen that do this out to about 200 yards with great success.

I'm confident in my shooting ability to be able to do it but would never. The key word in your statement is "marksmen" because a true hunter wouldn't take head shots.

Hope this was an accident and not intentional. 2 inches lower or a few inches forward and this deer would have died a miserable suffering death.

There was a time in my life where I was very confident in my shooting abilities and the equipment I used…I have taken several in my lifetime with a headshot. All of which were a calculated risk at the time due to the situation. I would never recommend it to anyone, or would I ever attempt that shot today, especially in a CWD zone. Never at the range mentioned by OP.

In addition to no meat destruction, it makes for relative clean field dressing.

My dad was very strict with us boys when it came to shooting ANY animal. He said, don't ever let ANY animal suffer if you can help it. That has always stuck with me, and I passed it on to our sons.

Same here. If I recall correctly, after sawing off many horns, there isn't much if any brain in that bullets path through the eyes.
