Ok i was wondering around what age you can start your kids out hunting? I know iv still got a couple of years my little boy will be 3 in March.Im not going to take him until he knows about gun saftey.

I started mine deer hunting at 8 (with a gun in his hand). I was taking him to the farm at 3 and he started sitting in a stand with me at 6.

Every kid is different. A little advice...don't start them so early because YOU want them to kill one. Start them when HE/SHE wants to do it and make sure they have fun. It's kinda like taking a kid fishing. It should be all about them, not you.

Good advice CAW. My son started at 7, my Daughter at 8,actually hunting. I took them to sit with me before that. Some more advice is, let them hunt, when they are ready, not as in if they want to kill a deer, but as in able to kill a deer. It took my daughter a year longer as in age, to shoot good enough to where I thought she could make a good shot on a deer. Another thing, when they say thier ready to leave, leave ! My kids sit very good now that they are hunting, but one time my son was sitting with me on a gun hunt. I think he was like 4 yrs old. About 1 hr after day light he said he was ready to leave. We got up and left, deer went everywhere ! lol...

If I had to do it again, I would concentrate on making their hunts fun and not taking them deer hunting until they are chomping at the bit to go. I would first take them squirrel hunting and dove hunting or whatever hunting provides a lot of action, camraderie and shooting with a size gun that doesn't kick too hard. I'm afraid I wore my son out on deer hunting by taking him at too early an age...we saw alot and he killed his share but he is not interested in it now. He loves guns and shooting and I hope he will get back in the woods eventually. As an adult I think it is wise to understand that a young child might not initially share your excitement. Let's face it, deer hunting can be brutal and it requires tons of patience. Just be judicious in teaching your children the sport that you love.

My son is 6 and he killed his first deer this evening. I started taking him squirrel hunting at the age of 4. We would hunt long enough to kill one or two and he was ready to go. He has been shooting a cricket .22 for a little over a year now and has gotten very good with it. I did take him deer hunting a few times in last couple years but made sure he had things to occupy his time like a coloring book. Like others have said, when they are ready to go, even its prime time in the evening, go. Keep it fun. We talk about gun safety year around. Some evenings we will get out in the yard and walk around with his BB gun always stressing gun safety. We have my son shooting a Bushmaster .223 with adjustable stock so it fits him very well and he now loves to shoot it. He was hesitant at first but I tried not to push him. He loves to go to the dove fields and retrieve birds too. You have to keep it fun and no matter how many questions they ask, answer them. My son is so inquisitive that it sometimes will drive you crazy because its question after question, but he is learning.

My son started at 8. First yr he could get a gun he could use safely. Hes kinda small and it was tough. Hes killed one each yr so far though. He shoots the Rossi tri fecta with the .243 barrell

Mine has been going since he was 3.He is 6 now. The day they say "I want to go" is when they go. If the weather permits
