This question doesnt apply to me but I wanted to ask. If any of you were in a finacle bind would you go out and shoot a deer even if the season was closed just to put some meat on the table?

No.. I would get off my butt and work for my meal. If I was that desperate I would sell my gun and certainly wouldnt be spending my time hunting. I know the economy sucks but food isn't that expensive and ANYBODY can find a way to make enough money to feed themselves.

I'd try harder to find a job and hunt legal game and fish if I had the time and the money for ammo and bait. I would also take a very close look at where all my money was going and manage my finances down to the dollar. I can live very cheap when I want to. I had a lot of practice doing it when I was younger. However, I'm single and really only have to worry about myself. Regardless, making sure that whatever money one has is going to the right places is something that applies to being married or single. I think it's really hard to answer your question unless you're in that situation with little mouths to feed. There's also public food assistance that can help.

I wouldn't, but have know people who do. From when I was 15 till my early 20's, I knew several people that hunted year round for that sole purpose.

It's too broad of a question.

Are you asking in the present economy would I kill out of season? The answer is no, there are jobs out there. Most don't pay as well as they did a few years ago and the benefits aren't what they used to be. But if you/me were willing to go to a sustenance livestyle you can make enough money.

Now if we were talking about a future economy, that drops us to depression era like levels. Then yes, I would kill to feed my family, regardless of what the government says. But on that same note I'd also disregard most other "sportsmenship" laws, ie shooting times, distance from roadways, probably even private property if no one was living on it, ect. I would be more a hunter of opportunity, be it turkeys with a rifle, deer at night, ect. Whatever it took to feed my family.

I also would never sell my last gun, it is the way to keep your family fed, that and knowledge of the land.

Good answer. Dont forget if the economy gets that bad that gun would be your only source of protection too! I hope it never comes to this.Alot of people dont have the skills to survive out there in the wild.

A couple years ago, times got tough, and I had the idea that I could kill deer and catch enough fish to supplement everything. I'd busted a couple does and would hit the river after work.

Let me tell ya, I like deer and catfish, but if you eat it every night for about a month, it gets OLD! Better off buying dried beans and rice!

If it were a matter of going hungry, dam strait I would. But in this country with all our free stuff, I cannot feature that happeing. Poach instead of taking a free handout? Nope. Poach instead of going hungry? Yep.

Hmm. Thayt's why I bought a brushgaurd for my truck. I accidentally ran off the road into this field and my gas pedal stuck and I accidentally ran over all 8 deer that were standing in the field.

shouldn't have to. You can use your Govt. supplied phone to call and check to see if they deposited money on your EBT card, then go to the Convienence store and but a 64 oz Slurpy for all six kids ages 1 to 8. Then hit the Cash Back option and get some cash so you can buy Cigaretts & Beer. There, everybody is getting thier nutrition.

get some food stamps, they are handing them out,,,well, to most anyway
I dont have a job, havent worked since Sept, yes I am drawing my unemployment, and with that managing to pay my house note, and other bills, and eat, did shoot 3 deer this year so got some meat to eat, it is manageable you just got to put your mind to it and make sure you only spend on what you have to have and not what you want to have, I have done without a lot, but it is stuff I wanted and not had to have,

This wasnt a question for myself. I have a great job. I just wondered what others would do if you and your family got backed up in the corner hungry like that? I personally would sell things I didnt need and could do without. If things continued to worsen I would shoot one to feed my family, but thats if lile others said if we were in a depression and I cudnt find work.

I always make sure I have enough deer meat in the freezer by the end of the season to last. If by some chance times got tough and I ran out of food, I would probably have one heck of a garden going and would raise rabbits for meat and fish in my free time.

The only people I've known that hunted out of season were people that did not have much of anything to begin with. They may have had a tv with rabbit ears and if they did, that was a luxury.

Well said Redfred.

I will add, it you feel you must POACH for food, you should call your local game warden. If the need is true, I bet he could keep you supplied in all the "Dead Deer" you could use. Just my thought.

If my kids were going hungry and there was no other way then I would. Having said that, I would never knowingly break a law in the outdoors...aside from going against my moral compass, it could also get you in even deeper trouble.

If I had to do this to feed my kids, and I had exhausted all other avenuues, absolutely. And then only what they needed to survive. If it were just the wife and I we could figure out other ways. This is the only way that I could ever see myself doing it.

If it meant the difference in my kids and family going hungry, absolutely I would feed them. It would have to be a last resort however.

No. I would not break a game law. There are food banks to get food from. They are legal. If you are too proud to ask for help, you definitely should be too proud to break the law.
