I hunted this morning out of the same tree I shot 3 does from a week ago. There are trails filtering by my stand but evidently they prefer the one that passes by within 3 feet of my tree. This morning started off with 5 does dead under me. Then a small 5 pointer came by within a few feet. Most of the does and bucks I saw last trip were within 25 feet from me. It's neat being so close but only if you hear them coming before they get there.

I keep a 35 foot pull up cord on my stand for hauling my rifle up. One end is permanently secured to my shooting rail. Standard operating procedure for me is to pull my rifle up, untie it, loosely tie the end to my stand, and then I throw the rest over the side. This morning I was about 17 feet or so off the ground. This means my cord runs from my stand to about 2 feet off the ground and back up to my stand again creating a loop of sorts at the bottom. I had a button buck and his sister come by this morning. The button buck was curious and walked straight over to my tree and started nibbling on my cord. He quit and backed away and then came back and did it again... and again the third time. To the deer tale... As I watched him that last time he kept sticking his head through that loop. I got to thinking that I don't know what I'd do if he was to spook, jump, and run with his head caught in that loop. I can see the headlines about a hunter that was snatched out of a tree by a deer, lol.

Mike with your luck with straps I think I would pull that cord up a little higher next time :D . Personally I used to just let my cord hang to the ground but the curious young deer always found it and spooked from the scent. Now I pull it up after I get to height.

Lol that's funny.

I once had a similar story but it was a calf, big to like 300 pounds. But I intentionally tied a loop an got it around his head. I thought I was a goner when he realized he was lassoed and it was tied to my climber. Needless to say I learned a good lesson when I was about 15 years old.

Deer can be very curious. Once I had a guy I hunt with tell me he used to tie a white pie plate to a string and put it in the open. The deer would go up and sniff the pie plate.

A couple years ago (my brother leaves his pull rope hanging) a small buck got his horns tangled in the rope. My brother said he was wondering what would happen if he didn't get loose but he did.
