This has been the worst deer season for me that I can remember. It all started before the velvet hunt. I went to a little farm I hunt to hang a stand and camera. Stand went fine, but the tree I picked out to put camera on was the same dadgum tree the dreaded yeller jackets decided to build a nest in the roots! When I started stomping down the vegetation, they came out with a vengence and ate me alive! I got over that, finally. Day before velvet hunt, I finally got time to shoot my crossbow to check the scope. On second the second shot all hell broke loose! Pulled the trigger and arrow made it about half way to target. Looked down and string was frayed all to pieces. Upon further inspection, noticed the right limb was busted. Excalibur has excellent customer service by the way and I had two new limbs by the next Tuesday. I get my Mathews out and shoot it couple times to check sights, since I haven't shot it in about 4 years. Opening morning of velvet I get a little over halfway to my stand and stopped and stood there for a few seconds and figured if I wanted to shoot a deer that I might ought to go back to the truck and get my bow cause I didn't have it! Then the deer sightings have been non existent. Had both my boys at yuchi for the juvy hunt. One saw 4 deer all weekend and the other never saw a deer. Statewide juvy they only saw 1 fawn between them all weekend. I hunted yuchi muzzy and never saw a deer. I'm ready to say screw deer hunting and just crappie fish all winter by now. Well I muzzy hunt this morning with my oldest (9 yr old). We settle in stand and about 830 he says dad there is a deer. I look out thru thicket and see legs. It finally gets to a small opening and I see it has a nice rack. I get ready when it steps out from behind trees and put the crosshairs behind its shoulder and stop it at about 40 yds. I pull the trigger and my smokeless goes POP. It usually sounds like something has broken the sound barrier when it goes off, but not this time! The deer did the mule kick and runs off in thicket. We look for a couple hours and only find one small drop of watery blood. Needless to say, I'm steaming over this and will be for a long time. Sorry for the long post, but this is how my season's gone. BTW my Vols suck too!

I hunted all day Saturday with an unloaded smokeless rifle.
I didn't find out until late Saturday evening when I tied to shoot a coyote with a primer.

What powder in the Smokeless?

You'll look back and laugh if you stay after it and get a good one down.

LOL, I lost it at "thought of I wanted to shoot a deer"

Sorry brother, seems some seasons are just like that.

I did that one time as well. Hiked all the way up the hill and went to put my climber on the tree and realized I had made record time up the hill with no climber on my back [emoji1]

My brother didn't get to hunt one year all season until the very end of season. He shows up and is getting ready and I hear "Oh S%^t" I asked what was wrong and he tells me he forgot his rifle. The one time he gets to go and he forgets the most important piece of equipment.

It happens. I hope it gets better for you. Just remember, you get a chance at a nice buck and kill it and all this bad won't mean anything.

I'm always excited when ML season arrives. So much so that I often make a few mistakes. But, I always learn. First of all, I missed the same buck twice a couple years ago because I did not clean the gun or change powder pellets from the previous season. I figured it was dry had not been fired last season and should be okay. It is really disappointing to fire and hear the "pop" of the cap when you pull the trigger. That buck just walked on over the hill. Well, I thought I'd try once more so I put another cap in and, using a doe bleat call, I turned that buck around and shot again and got another "pop". I won't make that mistake again.

So, did you not load enough powder?
Most likely bullet wasn't seated good :bash:
I measure the powder on an electronic scale and the pour the powder in an empty rifle casing and plug with an ear plug. I also have a marked a ring around my ramrod to check if it is loaded and if bullet is seated correctly. All I can think of is the powder got wet when I was at Yuchi. This is the only time I've had problems from this gun.

In order to have success hunting a million little details must go exactly right. If one tiny thing doesn't perform then the entire hunt can be ruined. I often wonder if those folks who make primers understand how important their job is. I've had a muzzleloader fail to fire on the last chance on a nice buck on an out of town trip. Not fun. But as was said earlier, it's that much sweeter when it all comes together.

On a good note, my son was shaking like a dog crapping a peach seed after i shot. I've never seen him that excited about anything. I know he loves to hunt and fish, but that just showed me how much! Looks like I've got a huntin buddy for life!

You have two legs to walk and lungs to breath. Also the extra money to hunt so don't sweat the small stuff God is Good

Amen to that!

3-4 weeks ago, i climbed up an oak tree that had a cedar tree growing up beside it. Tough climb but i figured the cover would be nice. When i got seated, i realized that i forgot to attach my bow to my rope. Climbed down, connected it, and went back up. Once I got set, i went to text my buddy and dropped my phone. I climbed down beyond frustrated and went to a ladder stand on the other side of the property. At that time, i wasnt seeing deer and i was ready to give it up until rifle season. Fast forward to last weekend, and i arrowed my biggest buck. Stick with it man!
