A coyote was crossing a train track just as a train approached. He decided to run across quickly and barely got across except for the tip of his tail which was cut off by the train. The coyote thought about it and decided to go back and retrieve the piece of tail that the train had cut off. He quickly returned without paying attention and just as he got to the track another train zoomed by, cutting off his head.
The moral of this story is, don't lose your head over a piece of tail.

Is that the same yote from the other pic? If not, there may be something to that mineral block, or the rock.
As to the tail, who knows, maybe someone took a shot at it

Different coyote. There's a game trail that goes right by the big rock. I get pics of all kinds of animals. I thought maybe he lost it in a snare. The farmer from the adjoining farm uses them.

I kind of doubt a snare would cause one to lose it's tail, but anything is possible. Could have been born that way, could have gotten attacked as a pup, could have gotten shot, or could be another reason you would never think of. Whatever the case kill em all.
