I was thinking of doing the same only mixing them with rye and maybe some brassica, this will only be an a 1 acre plot with good soil would this work or will they wipe it out too quick? I want this plot for attraction only, open to any suggestions. Thanks

Auatrian Winter Peas make for an AWESOME bow-season attractant. But unless you have many acres to plant, they will be wiped out fast.

I usually mix them in with oats and rape in a 2 acre plot. They do get nailed. Have thought about solely doing them on 2 acres to see how they held up.

In a good acorn year, maybe. A lot also depends on when you plant them. If you plant them long before acorns begin to fall, they will come up and be destroyed quickly. If they come up after acorns begin to fall, they will last longer.

If i planted them with some rye to cover 1 acre would they at least last till the first ML season?

As BSK stated,.. a good acorn year will take some of the pressure off,.. but one of the most important things is your local deer density. I talked to a guy that hunts in macon co. that has no problem with them not wiping out a acre before mz season,.. lower deer density in that area.

I have around 10 deer per square mile , very low density, and still cant keep 1.5 acres of them from getting wiped out. I just bought 150 pounds to try to plant more of them this year to see how that goes.

i plant them every year. I try to mix about 10
lb of pinto beans in with them. I also plant rye and wheat beside it. They will wear them out. Just fertilize them good and pray for a lot of rain and maybe they can keep up. the pinto beans help to. They love to eat those two big leaves that come up...

If you are considering planting early, here's another idea I use quite often: to protect your "winter" food plot plants from over-browsing, plant some quick-growth highly attractive summer plants in with them. Yes, the first frost will kill these plants, but they will have served their purpose by then. Deer often focus their feeding on these young plants, protecting the true winter crop until the first killing frost. This intense browse pressure on the summer plants also makes for an ultra-hot early bow-season plot.

My favorite "cover" plants for a fall/winter plot are soybeans and buckwheat.

I plant my small plots the second weekend in september they are peaking aobut first week in NOw. Acorns do take some pressure off of them.
