I sometimes hunt ag or grass fields where I could possibly get a 300-600 yard shot. I know the drop on the bullet I'm shooting but I'm not real sure on wind drift. With a 10 mph crosswind my POI is off 6.3". With a 20mph crosswind would that figure double at the same distance? Just for grins how many field hunters (or long range shooters) know how much their bullet drips?

Yes, it's double for a 20 mph wind over a 10 mph wind...I know exactly how far my bullet drifts in wind, which is exactly why I don't shoot past 400 in windy conditions. My last windy shot was at an antelope at 300 yards in a 20 mph crosswind...put the crosshairs right on the brisket, and the bullet drifted perfectly right behind the shoulder. If you aren't proficient in shooting in windy conditions, I'd strongly advise against it...otherwise you'll be gut shooting deer

Way outta my league dudes , farest I ever shot one was 259 yds and that's pushing me . My setups deliver mostly under a 100 yds a pop and hadn't hunted Lincoln Co. this year were you might get that type of shot .You guys that can shoot consistent at that yardage must practice a lot more than I want to . My hats off to those who can do this !!

Doing a lot of shooting with a 22/250 enlightened me on what the wind can do to a bullet. Won't affect me much for the next few days cause I'll be in the thick stuff with the 45/70!!

Mr. Belt,

Not sure what you shoot but twice within the last several windy days I've checked drift before squeezing the trigger at the link below. Day before last, 303 with a stiff quartering to. 4 big jumps later she was dead as an anvil but it never ceases to amaze how the wind can push a bullet in just a 1/3rd of a second. I keep is bookmarked in my phone.
