White oak ??

I have several white oaks and was curious at what age/size do they have to get before they produce an acorn?

White Oaka normally bear seeds between the ages of 50 and 200 years, sometimes older, however, opengrown trees may produce acorns as early as 20 years. Try to get some sunlight on a few of them and fertlize the drip line.

Thanks Steve, I am wondering about ones that are in the open and are around 12-14 inches across.

Depends on the soil fertility and moisture. In West and Middle TN, whites gerally start producing at 20-30 years of age (10-12 inches in diameter at breast height). However, in poorer mountain soils, they may be 40+ years old to reach maturity. In the very poor soils of the Ozarks, trees may have to be 50+ years old before they produce.

We cored a tree in the Ozarks that was the size of a 30 year-old tree in my area but it turned out to be almost 125 years old.

I have my eye on around 7-10 sawtooths to plant in the next few weeks. Not sure if I will plant them yet, have heard good things about them though.

They are AWESOME bow spot trees. They drop acorns about two weeks before the native oaks. Mh brother-in-law has several in his yard and they have already dropped their acorns.

I have better luck planting them in late winter--late February.

I planted some sawtooths last winter that were around 3 feet tall, they have made it about 5 foot over this year. Be interesting to see how they do in my rocky upland soil.

lowe's is going to clear them out for around15.00 and they are around 5 ft tall. If I buy them now will they live til Feb in it's original pot?

They should. They will be going dormant here very soon.

Thanks BSK, I may just buy them and wait til end of deer season to plant them. I had planned on buying some first of the year so this will work out and I can save a few $$$$

yes, just keep them watered. This is the beauty of container grown trees.
