ok I found a Savage (base model $550 out the door) at a good price. But I'm really likeing the TC BoneCollector (also good price$600 out the door). The TC is alot less weight and is a heck of alot easier to clean. My question is the Savage that much better of a gun? I have been looking for a Savage for weeks and now before I pull the trigger I'm second guessing myself. Is there going to be a problem finding smokeless powder? Also give me some scope recomendations in about the $250 range.

thanks

PS don't tell the wife ;)

Savage all the way!! Was easy to find a load that works (actually have 2, a distance load and a 150 & under) once you take the leap you'll never regret it. The recoil takes a beatin on a scope so invest wisely, but more importantly get steel bases and rings, never aluminum. Good luck. Steve

Which ever one "you like".

Ive shot both and right now i have the encore. Was gonna buy the savage but the stock to me just felt like shouldering a boat anchor and just didnt feel good at all. Felt cheap, but thats just me.
both guns will shoot good groups thats for sure. Powder would be no problem. you gotta clean them all and if you shoot the bh 209 powder in the TC cleaning is not a big issue at all.
You wont go wrong with either one but buy the one u like the most.
Another good scope for the money is a nikon buckmaster 3x9x40. I have 4 of em and not a problem .

I have had both the TC Encore and Savage. No comparison as far as I am concerned. Savage hands down....and despite what Sawdust said you only have to clean it once in a blue moon! That is what makes the smokeless so appealing. If you are looking at weight then ,yes the Savage is heavier but it is due to the higher quality steel used in the gun to withstand the higher pressures of smokless. If you get the right powder/bullet combination setup for the Savage you will understand its ability and why people like it. My opinion the TC is way overrated for what it cost. IMO

MRRUTVOL I would sure hope you clean your firearms more than that.

Apparently you know very little about the Savage. I may clean it after 50 or so shots but it has been over 2 years and it keeps right on ticking. They actually like a dirty barrel better or my 2 do anyway.

I would venture to say i have been around quite a few more savage muzzle loaders than you have ever laid eyes on...... What i was suggesting was u were the one that said to clean every "once in a blue moon"
I have always thought that was meaning a longgggg time.
I dont want a firearm that has not been taken care of,sorta like a vehicle with the oil being changed once every great while
but maybe i am wrong. if so im sorry. :)

Let me just say this and you can take it for what it's worth. I take emaculate care of all my firearms and have been shooting the Savage for over 10 years as for how many I have seen or handled is irrelevant to knowing anthing about them. The Savage is a extremely low maintenance ML . The only cleaning that I do is breechplug and ventliner replacements from time to time. As for the barrel I found that regular swabbing or cleaning of it causes the accuracy quality to vary more or that is the case with mine so cleaning of the barrel is not something I do regularly. Depending on the type smokeless powders used there is very little carbon build up in the barrel that requires regular cleaning. As for the TC or just about any other ML that is not smokeless I would challange you to shoot them for 50 to 100 rounds without cleaning and see what troubles occurr. That is all I have to say about it.

shot somewhat over 50 times with blackhorn 209 and the last shot loaded as well as the first and accuracy was fine so no problems here as you thought there would be.In not cleaning a firearm in over 2 years well not me or most people and i am not downing you either ,just never heard of someone taking immacculate care of a firearm and doing that, but then again if it works for you great.
carbon isnt the only reason of cleaning the inside of a barrel.
Correct me if i am wrong but i thought the savage didnt come out till late 2000 or early 2001. In my older age i may be mistaken as memory goes first with age :) :)
By the way I hope you dont think i was knocking your savage as they will shoot and i would own one if they would put a decent stock on them ,as i checked on prices of after market stocks but I couldnt justify adding a extra 200.00 just to replace the stock.

Fall of 2000 was the 10 ml with the percussion modules.

2001 was the 10ml2.

My mind is bad but I'm not off by much. The gun has been out for 9 years at best.

However, I'm as anal as most on here about my guns and MRUTVOL is dead correct on the cleaning.

One can't do with the encore and ANY powder with what one can with the Savage and ALL powders.

u be wrong ewc. How about uhhhh kill a deer. just kidding.I still cant commprehend not cleaning a firearm for at least 2 years but then i cant commprehend thinking you can borrow neary a trillion dollars and think u can buy yourshelf otta debt.
I named one ,can u name a few? :)

Yes you are right that it was not released by Savage until 2000 early 2001 . The one I had first was in 1999 and was a prototype that only a handful of people got their hands on. I knew a guy who worked within the Savage organization who got me mine. The breachplug design was changed once Savage took it on and released it later on. I also have the newer accutrigger model but actually get better grouping with the older model. I consider EWC as probably the most knowledgable person on this site as to what the gun can do. He has pushed the weapon to limits far beyond its original design in powders and bullets but then again his pockets must be a lot deeper than mine!! :o I just use the basic gun as it pertains to everday hunting purposes. I have had both a Knight and Encore MLs and they were a waste of money for me as to what they gave me performance wise compared to the Savage. My biggest gripe with the Savage is the ram rods they supply with the gun. The first were flimsy fiberglass rods that would buckle when pushing a bullet down the barrel. They are stronger now but I had 2 custom made aluminum rods made for mine . As for the stocks they could be better but they are much improved over the prototype one that I had . I had a custom made stock to replace it.

Good Luck SAWDUST...to each his own! ;)

My savage 10ml2 also preferred a "dirty" barrel.I also noticed that the more I swabbed the barrel between shots, the less accurate the gun would perform.

I would clean the Savage (if I ever bought one) the same as I would my centerfire rifles. That is, not at all between shots, but after each trip to the range. With BP or substitutes I'd clean it within hours of getting home, but with smokeless I might wait a few days, but still clean it within a week.

I'd also clean it from the breech end with a bore guard in the breech/chamber.

I find my TC Triumph is the easiest to clean of any ML I've owned; fewer crooks and nannies to hold fouling, and the breechplug removes with your fingers. But it is a bit of a pain to actually remove the barrel from the stock, but I only do that at the end of the year.
