I have a 45 acre area to hunt that's surrounded by several farms that receive very little hunting pressure the deer in this area use the property I hunt as a crossing and staging area. Most of the property is cedars and thickets with 2 small ponds. I have one ridge top that with some work I can put a small food plot that would be about 20'x200' would an area this small be worth planting?
If so what would be some recommendations for what to plant?

I see many votes for clover but nobody has specified what kind??? This past September, I planted red, crimson, Co-op-brand ladino, and WTI Imperial. I can definitely see the ladino and WTI imperial but the crimson and red have not been all that impressive.

For clover to be successful, soil needs to have a ph of at least 5.5, with higher being better. Clover requires a lot of maintenance with mowing & spraying for broadleaf & grass. First year fall plantings of clover are always going to be thin, plus it'll be spring before you see much out of red & crimson anyway. We usually frost seed clover in Feb.

Don't get me wrong, I love clover and have 37 plots full of it, but it does require a lot of committment to be successful.

Brassica is cheap & easy to grow and we always overseed sections of plots with it. For the first time, we added Daiken Radishes to our brassica mix this year and really impressed with the results. Leaves were about 2' tall & bulbs 18" long by mid Oct. Deer started hitting the radises earlier than other brassica. Please note that brassica needs about 60 days before first frost to yield maximum growth. We try to plant it in mid-August if we have enough moisture.

Sounds like your around a lot of ag. That sometimes makes getting deer to use a plot difficult. Maybe just a good stand of winter rye for a late season attraction. Jt wouldn't hurt to throw some white clover in with it since it's cheap.
