A buddy of mine said deer eat the leaves of whatever plant it is that produces these blooms. Said he wasn't sure if they ate the blooms themselves but the leaves they love.

I was taught in college that it was "ice cream" to deer. It is strawberry bush and the biologist that taught me used it as a tool to measure deer density on properties. If you see a lot of it, the there isn't a lot of deer on the property, but if you don't see any then vice versa. I have planted some on my property in cages and the deer don't let it grow out of the wire!
