What is this plant?

I saw several patches of this plant while turkey hunting with my dad this morning. He and I took several guesses at what it was, but I looked up pictures of them when I got home and they were all incorrect.

They kind of stand out, since not much green has sprouted in the woods yet, so I thought maybe it was something special.

awesome! thanks steven! I'm reading up on them now. Turns out they're entirely poisonous, except for the "apple" that they produce. It can be eaten once it's fully ripened and the seeds have been taken out.

I also read a little blurb in an article that says (according to legend) that the Native Americans made a poison out of them, which was sometimes used to commit suicide.

The root can also be made into a laxative. Good to know...
