I'm experimenting with a 180 grains in my 300 win mag right know . I'm thinking about dropping down to 165gr and see what kind of grouping I can get out of them . Has anyone had any luck with the 165. Heard stories about dropping the weight less than 180 really throws the bullets. Don't know how much trueness is taht

I shoot 165s out of my 30-06 and both 308s. With the added speed of the Win mag, I would make sure the bullet you pick will hold together at higher impact velocities. Partitions, Accubonds, Interbonds, Barnes, etc. Ballistic tips, SSTs, and standard cup-n-cores might blow up at close range shots.

I have a Win model 70 300 winmag that won't group any 180 grain bullets. But it shoots 150's into moa all day long. I have a Browning A-Bolt BOSS in same caliber that will shoot any weight very very well, just adjust the BOSS. I keep it in 180's but it also happens to shoot 125's amazingly well.

I recently picked up some Nosley Custom Competition 168 gr bullets and am planning on spending some serious range time building a long range round.

If you load your own, you can tailor components to fit that specific rifle.

I split the difference between 150 gr and the 180 gr and have had good luck with the 165 gr Hornady spire point interlock in my 300 Win. Mag for deer size critters.

i might go and try and see if the 165 work well. i know the 180 is ok in the gun, just not the shoulder . i probably stay with the 180's for deer season . i still got a few months to keep trying to find a bullet that works well

I've had a 300 since 1984. I've shot a lot of different rounds. It's really a matter of preference and I load my own. I've found that the 165 and especially 180 grain bullet makes a mess out of the deer where it hits them. 150's seem not to turn the meat into jello as bad as the 180's.
