this morning on public land I heard an animal I haven't ever heard before. I can't completely remember the detail so It's hard to explain but basically a low pitched growling kind of squeal. It wasn't too far off so I picked up my 30/30 and went to investigate and of course I found nothing. It wasn't like any coyote I ever heard, not cat like either, and I would think it was too loud to be a small animal like an opossum, and it had a deeper undertone that suggested it was a larger animal.
So here's the thing, the animal I think it sounded most like could have been a wild hog, but I did not find any hog sign. I did not look very thoroughly but usually you could tell if there were hogs by the rooting in the ground... maybe there are only one or two hogs in the particular area or I just didn't look enough to find the sign. There are hogs on this WMA but they are somewhat isolated some distance away across the interstate. I guess it's possible, and a hog is the only thing I could imagine the sound coming from.
Any thoughts?
