I went out to a little Civil War camp in Athens this afternoon. I hadn't found anything there in a while but it was close to home and it's always worth giving a new look. I hunted around a little while and didn't find anything and was actually headed to the truck to leave. I got a good signal in the 50s on my detector. Dug a little hole and about 6 inches down, I was looking at a round silver disc. I didn't want to scratch whatever it was...so I left it as it was until I got home.

To my very big surprise...that coin is a silver Spanish 1/2 Reale! It is wore slab out but just enough details left to be able to ID it. I am a little bit stunned! I never expected that AT ALL.

At one point in time holes were punched in coins and tied on a leather cord or other appropriate carriers as there were no pockets like we have today.
