Went about 2 feet down and back filled with woodland topsoil. I had already potted the tomatoes in woodland soil about three weeks ago and they were doing well. I've never tried this before or actually put them in the ground this early. We will see.

There was a man that used to sell fish at a flea market across the street from Fort Campbell. Sold nice tomatoes too. He told me his secret was he dug deep holes and put the heads and guts from the fish he cleaned in the hole. Then add some dirt between the fish stuff and the tomato. Said his tomatoes would produce until the frost took them out. He did say dig deep and cover with dirt. You didn't want coons and s such digging your stuff up.

I've always used a post hole digger to set out my tomatoes.
Dig about 12" deep, throw a handful of 6-12-12 in the bottom fill hole almost to the top with a mix of peat moss and soil and put my plants in, and water well.
