But I'm sure it will all turn around when they hire a receivers coach.

Looks like those solid hires that gator has been talking about has not helped the recruiting woes that florida seems stuck in!!

Yep in the last 7-10 yrs you also were ranked higher in recruiting, I see a pattern here no. 81

A pattern? McElwain only had about a week to try and recruit before the dead period. Has put his coaching staff together during the dead period, and today is 1st day off dead period. So really, how well was he suppose to have done. Not unexpected with a whole coaching staff flip.

Re: UF recruiting

Gators still think they get Cowart and Jefferson as a package deal. Just my opinion.it will be Auburn or FSU. FSU because he wants to stay in the State of Florida. Maybe Auburn because of Muschamp.Final visit for Cowan is Jan.30 to FSU. This recruiting season could spell disaster for the Gators for the next 4-5 years. Cowart says he already has his mind made up.

Dooley and Kiffin were hired in same time frame, remarkably they recruited into top 25 or lower
Yep, but they weren't at that number with 3 weeks to go till NSD. Got to wait till then to see where it ends up.

Re: UF recruiting

Gators don't know if they get Cowart or Jefferson or not. Nobody knows what a 17 - 18 year old kid is thinking. For the most part Gator D is intact. To say if you miss one or so guys one year that is spells disaster for 4-5 years done the road laughable. Urban Meyer only recruited like 17 or 18 players his first year and very few of them even contributed much to the team. We all know how that turned out. You can't look at a first year coaches class and make a whole lot out of it especially when every coach on the staff expect one in new. Second year will tell you a lot more. These big time recruits have been being recruited by these other coaches for years now and have built a relationship with them, if Muschamp gets a few of them it wouldn't surprise me.

Re: UF recruiting

Even though they have only eight 3-star commits with less than 3 weeks to go before NSD, the gators still hold on to the hope they can rally and have the kind of recruiting class Muschamp was able to put together his first year in Gainesville. Meyer had only gone 8-5 in his final campaign, and Muschamp still was able to put together a class of 19, 11 of whom were 4-star athletes. The still have hope they can improve on their current ranking of 94th and finish, perhaps, as high as their 12th place finish in 2011.

And who knows? Maybe they can. After all, Muschamp's final season record of 7-5 wasn't so different from the 'success' Meyer had back then.

Except that it's not the immediate past season that most affects the decisions of high school seniors. It's the record of the year before, the prospective team's record in their junior years.

The situations--then versus now--couldn't be more different. In Muschamp's first recruiting season, he was visiting recruits who had seen the gators go 13-1 in their junior years. This year, McElwain is visiting recruits who saw the gators go 4-8 as juniors.

And Muschamp was the highly regarded coach-in-waiting that Florida had lured away from the mighty Texas Longhorns. A very sexy hire in the minds of the recruits he visited.

McElwain is the coach the gators managed to hire away from Mountain West (they still exist?) runnerup Colorado St, where he had gone 21-16 in 3 years. Yes, he did have a stint at Alabama on his resume but, these days, that's just not so very remarkable. A solid hire, perhaps, but not one to stir the imaginations of anybody but the gator faithful.

The gators need to sign another 20 recruits to fill out their 85-man roster, and they've got 20 days to do it. Are their coaches confident they can do it by signing 4-star athletes? Maybe not. Their most recent offers have been in the lower 3-star range, as they try to entice recruits away from UCF and Louisville (unsuccessfully, thus far). And they just reinstated Gerald Willis, a locker room cancer if there ever was one (but a cancer with 4 stars!). Desperation?

Every year since the Urban Meyer era began, the gators have had more 4 and 5 star athletes than any team in the SEC East. As things now stand, Georgia and Tennessee will go into next season with 45 athletes of this caliber on their rosters (the Noles now have 49). With the return of Willis, the gators have 32. How many more will they be able to add to this short handed roster?
