My calling just us horrible. I have practiced and practiced. Diaphragm, slate, box... You name it. I'll try different mouth calls and it seems they all sound the same...raspy but hard to get that certain tone in the Yelp. Anyone over come this themselves?

Slate or box are the two easiest. Also, it doesn't take much. A few clucks and a four or five note yelp is sufficient a lot of times.

Out of curiosity, you aren't tone deaf are you? My dad is, and he has a hard time with his calls.

Not sure. I know I can't carry a tune in a bucket!!

Have someone show you what you're doing "wrong". You may sound just fine. Rhythm is more important. I have listened to a lot of horrible sounding hens in the woods! I personally like using a slate call more than most, but use a diaphragm a lot too.

Get on Youtube and search Scott Ellis with Woodhaven Calls.
He has several videos of how to and is VERY good at calling along with explaining how to run calls, especially diaphragm calls.

Practice, practice and more practice!! Keep one in your vehicle and on the way to and from work/school whatever keep trying. Atleast this way you wont get thrown out the house or cause a divorce!

I started with a pot call and then a mouth call, now days I utilize a mouth call more as I have developed a control issue with my hands. I'm having trouble controlling the striker, I do it when I write as well. It's almost like parkinson's disease, I develop an erratic motion when I try to maintain a rhythm or write.

I have been tinkering with a trumpet and would love to master them!

I found Scott today on you tube. He is awesome. I seem to be able to cut okay but my yelp is just rasp. Can't get the high note component at all without is "squeeking". Driving me crazy. Practice practice practice!!
