I always put out food plots, but this year I'm wondering if it is going to be too late or worth it to put out. I've got wheat and radishes to put out, and have my plots sprayed, but still see no rain in the forecast.

I put mine out. Turnips, purple tops and greens,, rape, oats. Figure it has to go in sometime and may as well be now. Ground was still wet from rain the day before. When it does rain, I'm ready for it.

If farmers considered the weather forecast, they would never plant anything! The rains will come sometime. They always do. Even if they come late, they will help the herd; Investment for the future.

I know farmers that will re-plant two or three times cause of deer eating the crops. They also have insurance on crop damage from weather and animals.

How much are you planting? the best plots I've seen this fall were either 1) lucky, or 2) drilled. If you have enough acreage to warrant a drill, it will let you take advantage of all the soil moisture as soon as we get a rain and hid the seed from birds.

These times are where a little shade and topology can help also. My plot is doing pretty in spots where it doesn't get full sun. It's also an old loading deck, basically a little bowl at the bottom of 2 perpendicular slopes.

Too late for radish but oat/wheat/rye there's still time. I planted turnip and radish back in August and both had time and enough rain to get a taproot/tuber down into the ground and find some moisture. They're looking great but I'd think planting them now into dry, dusty dirt would be a waste of time and seed. There's still time for cool season cereal grains to pull off a crop but I won't be drilling any until we get some rain.
