I need half a millimeter clearance for the front objective. Should I shim this or should I get different rings. The front objective is just barely touching the barrel when the rings are tightened down.

Don't put the shim in the ring, put it between the ring and receiver.

I have had to do this with one rifle I have and it has never been a problem.

This just really bites. Gonna get a new set. No sense in taking a chance on a shim that can possibly fail at the worst possible time. Going to make it right the first time and not worry about it later. The new Minox scope is just barely touching the barrel with low Talley lightweights. I just wanted a quick fix so I can shoot my new set up. Guess I'll have to wait a couple more days for the medium Talley Lightweights to come in. Hopefully they wont be too high and make me lose my cheek weld. The way it sits right now is perfect.

if it is touching at all you have to do something,,I would go up the next height ring,,

ditto

or use burris rings with inserts

Ah, I do have some Burris bases and rings somewhere. I will try them out and see. I'm just really stuck on Talley rings especially after I dropped my rifle down a 50 ft rock cliff and the rings and other parts of the rifle took direct hits and was still shooting dead on.
