I was just reading the new North American Whitetail story were
Bobby Worthington made the statement were a deer "scored 135-140 inches-about average for a 3 year old TN, 10 pointer"

I don't agree with that, more like 120-130, and I like that's high,
just wondering what others think?

Thats a bogus statement. It depends so much on what part of the state your hunting. An average 3.5yr old in certain parts of east tn would do good to break 100".

Thats what I was thinking, I know Bobby's up that way, but I will withdraw my earlier statement...110" mite be a fair average

Since he said "10 pointer", HIS "average" excluded all 3 year old TN bucks with less than 10 points. I still don't think the average 3 1/2-yr-old TN 10-pointer will break 130, but the average 3 1/2-yr-old 10-pointer should score about 10" more than the more common 3 1/2 sporting 8 points.

WAY, WAY high. Along the highland rim, 3 1/2s will average 100-110. In the Eastern mountains, well under 100. In the Nashville Basin, probably 110-120.

Here are the average number of points, outside spread, and basal circumference of harvested 3 1/2 year-old bucks in TN, by county. I stress the "harvested" part because hunters gun for the largest antlered bucks, hence the harvested numbers are skewed well above the average buck of that age in the woods. Normally, harvested bucks of any age-class gross score 10-15 inches higher than the average buck of that age that exists. So the below numbers will be higher than what the average buck in the area grows.

Notice the massive difference in antler size for the same age buck between east and middle/west TN. A classic example of how powerful a role soil and habitat quality are in antler growth.

In Sullivan County in far northeast TN, which has nearly an identical harvested buck age structure to the much vaunted Williamson County, the average harvested 3 1/2 year-old buck only has an outside spread of 12.3 inches, and 6.6 antler points. The average harvested 3 1/2 from Williamson County has an outside spread of 19.3 inches and 9.0 points. That difference is astrounding. The average harvested 3 1/2 year-old buck in Sullivan is smaller than the average harvested 2 1/2 year-old buck in Williamson County.

The key to his statement is "ten pointer". That eliminates a whole class of deer that we are debating over that would allow the numbers to be skewed.

x2. Without any data to go off of, I would venture to guess that there is not any state where free ranging 3.5 year olds AVERAGE 135-140", regardless of the number of points. Again, the key word here is AVERAGE.

Very true in my neck of woods. On average.

I didn't catch that part of the statement. Still his prediction is high.

He is a lil high imo, but the fact he stated 10 pt average, definitely raises the average a great deal from any 3.5 yr old buck. I would say 125 is close when dealing with only 10 ptrs.

I thought antler size had nothing to do with age? At least that is what I have read on here.
Nothing??? Point me to that thread/post so I can read it too. I read most threads here but must have missed that one.

I think some people see what they want to see on here regardless of the facts. And then there are those that like to kick dead horses over and over again!

Age has a lot to do with antler score with in a particular buck and even so with in a particular area...just not so much when talking about an entire state. You probably misunderstood or misread... :)

I did not misunderstand or misread. When the "resident experts" talk about it, especially when arguing against lower limits and shorter gun shorter gun season, they consistently say it does not matter how old a deer gets in Tennessee it will grow no bigger antlers. I have read it over and over. I am scared to post what was posted by a very influential person in deer hunting in this state, but if I quoted what he posted, those on here "drinking the kool-aid" still would not believe me.

How does one man come up with a state wide comment? It would take me several life times to understand Ohio's white tails. So, right off the git go I seriously wonder about the comment. I'll keep it in mind, but...I think I'm being sold some snake oil.

I've not once read anyone saying that.
