I have been talking with a buddy that has planted a few of them on his property and he just keeps going on and on about them.What do you guys think of them? Pros, cons?

They are cheap,super fast growers and produce early. Dwarf Chinkapins are supposed to be good too but I havent found any yet.

I have mixed feelings. I have between 400-500 that are about ten years old. Mine are dropping acorns pretty good for the first time this year. They are not a bad looking tree, but don't seem as hardy as native oaks. They also seem to sucker and bush out more. They grow fast and probably don't have the lumber value usually associated with oaks. I also wonder about longevity. Mine were severely damaged by the late freeze we had a few years back. Some died back to the ground, some were severly damaged, and other just lost some smaller branches. My native oaks did not seem to suffer. That is likely the reason it is taking them this long to produce - I think that 5/7 year range is probably a good estimate normally.
I planted 600+ of them four years ago, but lost 50% due to drought. The ones that survived are growing very well. I'm very interested to observe when they produce acorns and IF my deer are attracted to them.
I'm blessed / cursed / by having numerous quality food soures. I'm hoping the Sawtooth's offer a little more diversity, encouraging deer to leave the ag fields and head into my hard woods during early archery season.

Anybody know if deer/turkeys really like the acorns? I have about 15 on my place anywhere varying ages from 6 to 2 years old. No acorns yet on the older ones.

I have a few that are 10+ years old and I have never seen so many durn acorns in my life . Pros , hold deer early cons , they are all gone by late oct . Im about to start planting some more . The plan is to plant a white oak for every sawtooth I plant. That way I get the best of both worlds acorns in 6 or 7 years, and white oak acorns in 20 to 25 years. If the sawtooths die off I will be left with a good timber quality tree plus one that will drop acorns for my grand children's children .plan on putting trees on terris in open field about fifty ft apart . I got miles of terris to work with so I'm not wanting to crowd them at all. Drout may be an issue on the terris ,the ones that are doing well are in low bottom land water is not a problem there. I'm also going to use tree tubes on all of them . Cost more but u can keep up with where u put them exactly that way. Plus the sawtooths want to bush out real bad the tubes make them grow up instead of out.

There is supposed to be a gobler sawtooth oak that has smaller acorns and turkeys are suppose to like them , the deer love them ,I watch deer on there hind leggs boxing the limbs trying to get fresh acorns to fall. I have yet to see a turkey eating one
I hunt a farm that has 1500+ planted and they are about 20 years old. I've never saw so many dang acorns in my life. I swear the acorns this year are ankle deep in places. The deer love them, but I think theres just so many this year, they can't keep'em eaten. Turkeys love'em too. Where I hunt they also love the leaves and keep any branches <5' clean of leaves.

I can't wait until they start dropping acorns. Hopefully in another two or three years some will. I have seen them before but never hunted around them. Some of ours are the gobbler sawtooth oaks. How long did it take some of yall's to start producing?

From Musser Forrests you can get 100 bareroot for $80 I think,not bad compared to Mossy Oak at $3.49 each. I got some yesterday from Mossy Oak just to compare quality and I was totally impressed with all the trees I got from them and their rootballs are Impressive x 2.
