A little background first. I shot a doe shortly before 11 am. I was walking/ still hunting, and just Happened to walk up on a deer at 21 yards and shot it. Hit the deer, lots of brown gray fur, absolutely no blood and found 6 inches of the nock side of the arrow with just a bit of blood where it broke. I stayed in the clump of woods looking and after more than an hour I ventured into the abyss field. I got into thick stuff and bumped deer off the bed, 2 or 3 it sounded like. One circled back and let me take a video. My bow was lying back in the woods where I shot the doe. Never NEVER go in deer territory without your bow. I just got schooled by this deer. Question? Why on earth would you try and find a wounded deer and leave the bow behind?

Exactly. I couldn't get the video to load, but I never, ever walk into the woods to do anything hunting related without a gun, bow, mzl.

At least you know he is there now. Good luck.

So were you just standing there for the deer to see you or were you trying to remain hidden? I'd been on the ground and not seen so as not to spoke the deer any more than had been done.

good question, I have no good reason, and until today I always carried the bow until I found the deer. Murphy's law must have influenced me because of that buck. I got my bow now and I'm checking the river bank and then going back to square one to look for blood one more time before I have to head out. No idea where I hit this doe except that it's brown fur and must have been close to the leg or shoulder, because there were no trees that could have snapped the end of the arrow off.

I was just standing in the middle of a deer trail motionless with my iPhone taking video. Wish it had been the bow and not the phone in my hand. The buck was less than 10 yards and I could have brisket shot into the heart easily.

Never leave the weapon somewhere else. However, don't think you would have gotten a (good) shot on that buck with a bow. Anything else, yeah.

:D Oh boy I saw those antlers and my heart just sunk. I'm still laughing though.

I hope you find the doe and like you said at least you know he is there I'd be near that trail somewhere if possible.

Oh I've already decided to hunt that field tomorrow morning. Huge intersection of trails in a grassy area that all come from the thickets. Right where I saw that buck. Gonna ground hunt from the lawn chair.

As for the doe I got back on her original trail with a couple of tracks and hair that had snagged on bushes. I found the trail she took out of the woods and it goes straight into some of the most impenetrable briar thicket in the field. I almost got stuck in there... I have to head out now but will be looking for buzzards in the future. Even if I find her and the meat is ruined, I will know where she died and use it to learn from. Maybe she survives though. Never did find the rest of the arrow. Least I know where the bucks are, maybe if I'm super lucky I can fill my 3rd tag with a nice one like I got on video. He was at least 3.5 years old

"...brisket shot into the heart easily."

You just missed a shot at whole kill area. Don't even think about trying a head-on shot until you can hit one broadside. Your area head-on is about 4x4 inches.

at 8 yards I could have hit it. The doe was at 21 yards, stretching my comfortable range and she had a few twiggy bushes around her so there could have been a deflection even though I'm sure it would not have deflected much at all. Whenever I target shoot at 10 yards I always hit within 4x4 so there is no reason I couldn't have killed that buck if I had a bow. Tomorrow I will set up and if I get a shot at that buck or another one like it, you bet I will carefully pick the shot.

Haha I was thinking the same thing... on the other deer you have shot been farther back liver/gut shots and I've seen you say you have shot a couple trees too. Maybe you need to bring your comfort range a lil closer or just use a gun. Mistakes happen but Dam son. I'm still trying to figure out why your still slinging arrows around at does you have already shot plenty to feed 5 Ethiopians. And it makes me mad when people don't look hard for a deer that's wounded just because its a doe and you have already shot couple more. You owe it to the deer to make the best shot , with a humane fast kill and to try your damest to find it . I guarantee if it was that buck you shot you would be still be looking for it. You need to learn from your mistakes so you will stop repeating them. Think twice next time you just fling a arrow. Jmo

Catman, you've killed a handful of deer this year but you've got to realize shot selection is important. Taking one bad shot certainly is no reason to take another.

I'm not saying this to upset you. I missed four times with a rifle last year so I know how you feel. I felt bad about it and realized I needed to be more patient though.

I backed out because not only do I have to go to work, but also will hunt that field tomorrow for the buck an didn't want to get into the bucks comfort zone and cover it with my scent. Tomorrow I can look for the doe some more, when I'm done hunting, since its cold enough for the meat. Shouldn't have shot the doe through the bushes because that's just an iffy shot. Just the fact that I walked up on a deer in bow range and had a chance to shoot it got me a bit too excited, I have wanted to shoot one from the ground with a bow and still hunting made it even better. But next time if its not a real clear shot, I won't take it. Oh and you mention my liver shots on previous deer. I was shooting a different release that caused me to punch it instead of a steady squeeze. I have gotten rid of that problem and am shooting better now.

you said a key word there, patient. I think you are right. Shot was rushed and unexpected because I walked up on a deer and was able to take my bow off my back, nock an arrow, draw and then the deer stepped to the right and I said a "meh" and shot it and don't know where the arrow went or why it didn't bleed. It was likely shoulder area because of the way the arrow broke. But you would think that would bleed a lot. I'm puzzled

Its still about ethics. Your still worried about that buck more than your doe. Another bad shot, and this time through thick stuff with gun you can get by but a bow.. seriously any little twig could have deflected the arrow.. and you said you backed out because work and the buck didn't wanna get scent out on the ground. Well that's just selfish, the doe could be bedded down with a arrow in its neck or leg needing a to be finished off but instead of respecting the deer your gonna put that aside so you can hunt a buck. I just disagree its bad ethics all the way around for me. And just so you know most big deer that have been jumped won't make that mistake twice in the same area within 24 hours again. Concentrate on the deer you wounded first then go after another one. And stop justifying reasons just own it . You messed up people do that no hunter hasn't just take it in and learn!

Major BS! I've shot thousands of times the arrows you have and I would not bet a Sundrop I could hit that spot at 8-yards. How much have you practiced at eight yards? Do you even know where you arrow hits at eight yards? Go put aplaying card up on your target and shot at it 20 from eight yards. Then tell me how many times you hit it. You think that deer is just going to stand there? You may carefully pick the sh0ot but so far this year, you are not having much luck at hitting it.
