I decided to try something different this year. I always plant a winter cover crop of wheat and crimson clover on my dove fields. This year I went into the field in late March as burned down the rows I would be planting into. Sprayed a 12 wide band every 36 inches. Glyphosate and spartan charge.
Then this week I came back and planted into the rows that had been burned down. This allows my clover to produce nitrogen, get some wheat seed produced for this fall, and helps with weed issues.
This may work or may be a disaster.....but gotta try to learn.

I run agleader GPS in the cab but not sure if I want to spend the extra money on auto steer....but some days I wish I had it.
GPS sure makes things much easier but in only accurate to about a foot.
Its paid for itself in chemical savings in about a year and allows me to plant at night.

When I'm planting and glance at my cross track error (calculation for position error) it's usually less than an inch. It's case integrated auto steer with pro 700 unit

Update. This photo was 48 days after planting. It was taken june 7th. Pretty clean but not as clean as Chaneylake fields....
I had some deer browse and lower germination. But it will still draw birds. Wheat has fallen to the ground but will be available to doves.

I wish they would come out with a roundup version of sunflowers. No matter what I do I have more weeds than sunflowers.

They are not produced by Monsanto, so glyphosate isn't the herbicide to which they are tolerant, but same concept. You just have to use their chemical. But if you price the seed and the necessary chemical, you may decide that a few weeds are tolerable.

The chemicals used on Clearfield sunflowers is way outdated for weeds/grasses found in Tennessee.

Been there done that no T-shirt
