Im thinking about a new bolt gun. Im looking at the Remington 700 and at the Savages with accutrigger.

Heres what I am thinking about....

Made in the states.
.308
Long range accuracy. (600 yards)
Beautiful wood, no plastic or black tactical stuff.
Heavy barrel...maybe?
Prefer stainless, but might consider blue.
Sub $1K price range.
Application is plinking and punching holes in paper. Wont be used for hunting, so weight is not a big factor.

pretty tall order there..

you are probably lookin at a VSSF 308 and an aftermarket stock to get all that done ..the VLS is a tack driver if you like laminated,,I dont think anybody puts pretty walnut on thier fat barreled long range outfits.

a standard BDL will do with a little bedding work if you don`t shot real fast.

For that much cash,if it had to be made in the states my vote would be a Kimber Longmaster.

Alot of people may make fun of me but for the buck you can't beat a Savage. But you'd be outta luck on the beautiful wood, they have some ugly stocks. Look at the Model 12 Varminter in .308, Laminated, Stainless, and most likely will shoot into half MOA. You can get em' for less than seven bills.

a couple of years ago i thought savage was a generic gun till i got a chance to shoot one. It will out shoot every gun i have hands down. I have 3 now und just purchased the long range precision varminteer with a 6 OZ trigger in 22-250 It will put all 5 shots in one ragged hole at 100 yards, that is when im doing what i should. Savage Rocks !!

the Kimbers are very nice rifles and the first 5-6 i had time with were all tack drivers, but the last 2 a 7-08 and a 223 were just so-so.

a lot nicer lookin and fit and finished but they will not out shoot a Rem. but Rem doesnt make what he`s lookin for and its in his range I would have no reservations about recomending the Kimber I just wouldn`t expect it to shoot better groups than the Rem.

the VLS 6mm I had,had a smooth beavertail forend with no checkering,,it would drive the tacks holding the target, till about 4200 rounds and it started going hayire and I got the 204,,wish now I`d a just rebarreled to a 20 BR.
