For those hanging with em at this point in the season, just a little info…take it for what it's worth. While working in the yard yesterday (yes in the cold, wasn't really that bad if moving), my white oak acorns have started go to root. My deer abandon them at this point and focus on reds, food plots, or ag fields from here on out…

The one I shot on the 7th was full of red oak acorns.

I'm beginning to wonder if something was wrong with our White Oak acorn crop. Earlier in the season, we had White Oak acorns covering the ground, but the deer were living in the food plots. However, once the Red Oak acorns started to fall heavily, the deer abandoned the plots, just like they normally do when the White's start to fall.

I want to say I remember from one of the MSU podcasts that in order to digest acorns, deer have to have roughage so you'll still see them in food plots. However, that wouldn't explain why you saw them only when feeding on white oaks and not red oaks

When looking at buck activity on my place, I see two distinct movement/activity patterns, one for good acorn years and one for bad acorn years. However, this year the first half of the season displayed a pattern that was an odd mix of the two, despite a bumper acorn crop.

Still trying to figure it all out.
