I have a post 64 Winchester model 70 30.06 that I want to put on a new stock. I am having the barrel crowned after season ends and some trigger work done as well. Should I go synthetic, wood, laminate? I want to bed the rifle as well after I get a different stock for it. What would ya'll recommend? Thanks for your input.

Entirely up to you on the Stock Type.

I like some in all types myself, more depends on the Stock instead of what is made out for for me.

if i where hunting with it i wouldnt get anything to pretty to just beat up while hunting. i personally like synthetic, but it all depends on how it shoulders and if i like the way it feels.

I changed over a stock on one of my guns, I sent out for a laminated blank, I did all the fit and finish myself and it came out great. I went with a thumb hole and now have two after I found out how much steadier I could hold on target free hand with it.

I "had" a gun with a syn. stock, I hated it. Sold it last yr. I never liked the feel, the balance of the gun after I put it on, and the noise in the woods if a branch hit or dragged against it. It was not good.

The stock shape and feel can make or break how you feel about the gun, if it doesn't fit right you will not trust it. Lack of confidence will lead to judgement that the gun itself is not good. Take your time and look around.

Depends on how much you are willing to spend and how much work you want to have to do. I would stay away from cheap plastic stocks. Cheap plastic stocks can actually bend if you use a sling and cinch it down too much which will throw off your shot. McMilliam is top of the line. If you really want plastic, check out the hogue overmolded stocks with the pillar bedding.

I like the look and feel of laminate but sometimes there is work involved like sealing it or even fitting it.

Here are a few pics of one of the laminated stocks I did @ 9 yrs ago. I bought the blank and did the rest myself, it is finished with 12 coats of hot Tung oil. Water beads off of it to this day.

Considering what you are doing I suggest a good laminate over syn.
I have a SPS syn Remmy 700,and it works, but would never choose it over a high quality wood laminate.

Many reasons why the hollow syn is not the best option available.
Apples and oranges.
