Is a life jacket required when using a stand up paddle board? From what I've witnessed around Tims Ford it seems about 50/50.

Thanks

I just checked with our boating gurus to confirm that outside of a bouyed off swimming/beach area that pfds are required for stand up paddle boards. If they are 12 and under, they must be wearing the pfd. If they are older than 12, it must be aboard the paddle board. It cannot be tethered and drug behind.

A Type III/V belt pack that is worn will meet the regulations.

This is totally off topic but I saw a couple persons of the female persuasion while working today. They were both on SUP on the river in Chatt and although I feared for their safety because they had no life jacket on , I was quite pleased that they did not have the top heavy ones on. Both appeared to have the ones that attached at the rear fully attached.

That is all, drive through. I love Spring and Summer around here. :)

Also, on a serious note. Good info Steve. Those things are becoming popular. I hope everyone enjoys it safely.

Seriously though..why does a paddle board require a PFD, while a canoe/kayak/pirogue does not?

If a 12 year old is riding in a canoe/pirogue they are required to wear a PFD. Passengers under age 16 cannot legally wear the inflatables.

Oops, sorry. I wasn't thinking straight, and got mixed up with the registration laws.
