Several weeks ago I took my six year old son to the hunting cabin for some squirrel hunting. As we were getting ready to walk in the woods a beagle decided to join us. We had never seen the dog before and he would not leave. Parker and I continued. Parker named the dog copper. As the hunt went on copper began to run off the sides of the hills and bark like crazy. This happend a few times before I realized what was going on. Copper was treeing squirrels... Copper followed us around the rest of the evening and was gone in the morning. Needless to say Parker wants a beagle that will tree squirrels. I would like to get him a beagle. How do I train him/her to tree. Can this squirrel dog also be a pet for Parker? Copper was last seen on irons creek rd in overton county. He has a collar with no name.

beagles make 1 of the best hunting dog/pets for kids that i have found.normaly they take to chasing squirrels & rabbits & Deer with very little training.they can be hard to break from chasing what ever pops up in front of them.like any dog they may not have it in them to hunt as hard as the trainer wants.very mild mannered for the most part.#1 pick for me for a kids pet

Beagles do make good pets. They are bred to hunt rabbit scent. Time and patience I think you can teach the squirrel thing. As far as chasing trash, use tri-tronics. Good Luck.

I know Beagles are great with kids, but one treeing squirrels is probably not that common. I hunt Mtn Feist, they are small and great with kids plus treeing squirrels is a natural thing for them.

i recently rescued some pups that are a mixed breed. originally thought they were border collies and now it seems like they are beagle mixed with border collies. coincidently i named mine copper also lol. great dog so far. havent tried any hunting with him but he points and follows his nose instead of his eyes. i could see these dogs being pretty good hunting dogs.
