I have hunted whitetails for over 32 years and can't remember ever missing a season. I now have a herniated disk compressing my sciatica nerve. I have back surgery next Friday and not sure how long I will be down for the count. Hopefully I will be able to salvage November and December???

I would take care of myself first. Get that back in shape before I worried about hunting season. It sucks but your health is first. I had a heart attack during bow season of 2008. I was able to venture out some during muzzleloader season with the help of my brother. But it was not the same. It will get better for the next year.

Thanks Winchester. I have good friends that are willing to help if I get one. so not all hopefully will be lost. It just sucks when you wait all year and to have the rug pulled out from under you. Good luck to all and be safe.

Best of luck to you. If you have to miss this season hopefully that gives you time to recover fully and be 100% for next season!

I had a weird situation in 2010. I was 27 years old woke up one October morning with an incredible pain in my lower joints. I could hardly move until noon each day. I was stiff and hurt, it was almost unbearable. I forced my self to work as much as possible though I was more in the way than doing good. I saw several doctors and specialists and none were able to pinpoint the problem. Just like the pain started one morning it left the same way, 2 weeks before season closed I was able to go hunting again. I was able to shoot a 4 point and 2 doe's for some meat. Hang in there and maybe you will be able to heal and get in some hunting.

chubacabra,

As firedog said, first and foremost, take care of yourself!

Second, I highly recommend follow the doctor's instructions to the letter. In most cases, his/her recovery advice was developed from years of research and testing of different recovery programs. I'm not saying doctors are always right, but I sure know from personal experience what results I've had when I followed recommendations and when I didn't. Following recommendations to the letter has always produced the best results.

Lastly, DO NOT PUSH YOURSELF TOO HARD (especially beyond recommended levels). Limitations are set for a reason. Trying to force your body to recover faster often has disastrous consequences.

Good luck!

chubacabra,
I had surgery a few years ago for the same thing. I was sore for a week or so, but really it wasn't as bad as I was expecting. I wish I would have had mine during deer season while I was out of work :)

Honestly, I wouldn't lift more than my rifle or bow. And I WOULD NOT climb ANY type of stand. Since you're dealing with nervous you can have some numbness and it took a while before I felt 100% steady on my legs. I am not a Dr and have never played one on TV, but I was told walking was good for my recovery. So I would check with your Doc, but I bet you could walk to a ground blind then rest for a bit before walking back to the truck.
