was out in the garden this evening using a hand 3 prong cultivator to rid the last of the crabgrass and was admiring the soil after 3 seasons of wheat straw mulch during planting, turnip and winter wheat covers along with the ground up garden litter from the compost pile. i must say that when i first broke this ground it was hardpan clay full of rocks, and i knew it would be a little tough the first year ridding the rocks, but it has turned out well. i shot my fingers about 6 inches into the soil and its nice and crumbly full of organic matter and for once red wigglers. i only forward tilled the top 1 inch this year and am hoping i wont have to do that next season.
well, gonna build a small, crude cold frame this week so i can have some cool season lettuce, radishes, maybe a few carrots, and onions thru some of the winter.
