hey i just got a new 11-87 12 ga.im going to get me a slug barrel for it.Any one got any suggestions about what kind of slugs i should start with? Read some good stuff about the new remington accu tip sabots. What about a scope? I dont really want a 2x7 power.Yall think a vx2 3x9 would be ok?

The slugs you use will depend on the slug barrel you get and the rate of twist. As general a rule not necesarily written in stone, the slower the rate of twist, the slower the slug. I have a hastings barrel with a 1:34 rate of twist. It really likes slugs in the 1500fps range the best. At 50 yds, the Hastings 2 3/4 magnums make a single ragged hole. At 100 yds, the groups are 1 to 2 inches. I shot hornadays which I think are around 2000 fps and the groupings at 50yds were around 5 to 6 inches. If you go with a Badger barrel which is a bit cheaper than the hastings, it has a faster rate of twist (1:26) and will shoot the faster slugs like the accu tips and the hornadays much better. If you are getting a remington barrel, I believe they have a 1:35 rate of twist so they will work better with a slower slug. Regardless of which barrel you get, you will need to go out and buy a bunch of different slugs in various weights and speeds to see what your gun likes best. I have heard some people say that hornadays work great out of their hastings barrel.

The only real negative about going with a slug like the accutips is that they are so expensive that as a result you won't shoot them as much and become as proficient with your weapon as you would if you shot something much cheaper.

As for a scope, thats all based on your application and personal preference. I have a 1.5-6 on mine. I like the lower powers for faster target aquisition and I never intend to shoot much past 100 yds with it so 6x is plenty for that distance. 3-9 is fine. More than likely you will hunt with it on 3x and then shoot it at the range on 9x and never use any of the settings in between. The reason allot of people go with the 2-7 power scopes is for a slightly faster target aquisition and they are usually a lower profile scope and don't weigh as much.

Here is a good article that you should read.
