I am hunting in Pennsylvania this year and it's likely to be slug gun only.

I have a mossberg 535 and a New Haven 600ct (knock off mossberg 500) in 20 ga.

I am trying to determine the best all around option for a slug gun.

Here are the three options:

1. Rifled barrel for my 535.
2. Rifle barrel for my 600 ct
3. Buy a slug gun.

What are the thoughts on the 20ga and 12 ga. Mossberg slug guns? How accurate are they with sabot slugs?

I really want a savage 220 but how well do the 20ga slugs hold their kinetic energy over a 12 ga.?

I've heard 12 ga slugs aren't as good as a 20 ga.

I'm not sure which would be better but I would hit some ammo sites and look for velocity and energy ratings for the different calibers then decide which way to jump. Personally I would use my muzzle loader if its allowed 200y plus and less of a rainbow trajectory ,good luck :tu:

Just curious as to why it would be slug gun only in PA? Is there a state law now or is this a local rule on the land you are hunting?

Can you please share your 200 yrd setup. My Ml is an old non-magnum.

I will be hunting primarily in 5d, it is a special regulations area. I may do some on 5c and will not have the same type of regulations.

Following. In a similar situation. Don't own a muzzle loader, and considering using a shotgun during that season here. Have Mossberg 500's in both 12 and 20. trying to determine if I go with sabots or a new barrel, and in what caliber.

If you have the money, go with the savage 220 otherwise consider the H&R slug gun. Either one of those would be better than buying a slug barrel. A sloppy fit slug barrel isn't going to have very good accuracy in comparison to a dedicated slug gun. 20ga is better at longer distances than 12ga. People shoot out beyond 200 yds with the 20ga. The 20 ga does not kick as much and has a flatter trajectory and affected less by wind. 20ga slug guns guns are also lighter. On the other hand, if you don't think you will ever shoot much past 100yds, I would go with the 12ga. I am partial to bigger holes. I have a rem 870 converted to a dedicated slug gun with the barrel pinned and a scope mounted to the receiver. I can get 2 inch groups at 100yds. I have always felt the 12 ga slug was the best round for hunting typical TN woods where shots much out past 50 yds are uncommon. I stopped carrying it because I am getting older and don't want to carry the weight.

What little I know about this topic is that Sabots and shotguns can be very picky about accuracy. Some sabots seem to shoot well all the time, others are much more gun specific.

I believe a 20 ga is plenty of poison with the correct sabot. Difference in velocity and downrange punch is not all that much.

I'm thinking about a 870 with a red dot for pig hunting Georgia. I have a h&r 12 slug gun I haven't shot yet but I was thinking of fast follow up shots. Thoughts?

Probably a dumb question, but I couldn't find any info on this. If using a pump gun, is there a magazine restriction? Do I need to plug the tube like I would for waterfowl, or can I stick 5 in the tube?

Savage 220 has rifle like accuracy out to 150yds or so. After that it just starts dropping pretty good. My 220 actually shots better than some rifles I've had at 100yds. It shoots better than ANY other slug gun I've had including the H&R.. hope this helps. And between myself and my buds, we have 6 220's....

That would depend on the distances you expect to shoot and the way you have the 870 setup. The fact that you said red dot makes me assume shots will be under 75yds which should work fine as long as you use a good hard cast slug like a brenneke black magic magnum or dixie slug.
