SluFoot H&R 45-70 Conversion

Wow Robert Slufoot Young does impressive work!!! Jus got my Gun back from him after less than two weeks. He recrowned the barrel and put an index mark on it for consistent sabot orientation. Installed the Savage Breech plug after customizing it, head spaced it. Built my ramrod from scratch it extends. Mounted it under the barrell. Al this for two hundred bucks and 2 weeks turn around. Wow!!! I sold the factory connamon laminate thumbhole and bought the Boyds left handed camo laminate stock and forend. This baby is sweet. Added a DNZ Game Reaper mount and rings and a 3-9x40 Minox. Cant wait to add 62 grains of N 120 a Blue Crushed Rib sabot and a 195 barnes and squeeze one off!!!

I see one major problem with that gun. It's left handed!! It is a beautiful gun.

There are a couple of us with this gun now and they all shoot pretty well. Unless you already have an encore frame, the H&R is a cheaper way to go.

Im thinking of getting a H&R 45-70 and doing the slufoot conversion.I already have a Savage 10ml with the Pacnor 45 cal barrel on it,and its a tack driver and a half..But I've come to realize,its a way over kill for where I hunt.I never have shots over 100yds.Im seriously thinking of selling it and buying a H&R 45-70 and haveing the conversion done,and I'd still have money left over.

It never hurts to have 2 lol. As good as your Pac Nor shoots I'd keep it and build an H&R too. The H&R's are great for hunting in climbing stands and shooting houses because they are so short.

on the H&R ultra, is anyone having to knurl their bullets, or are they shooting great without it?

I tried Knurling the Barnes expanders but still couldn't get them to group as well as the Hornady SST's. Barnes were .398-9 where the Hornady's were a full .400 diameter.

A non-knurled SST would 3 shot group 13/16" at 100 yrds. where the knurled Barnes (.401) were about an 1.5".

Are the sst's a tight fit? I got 10 from luke when I got the 195's but haven't tried them yet. Have you shot a deer with the sst's if so how did they perform?

They are a firm load but don't load as tight as some of the 50 cal. combo's I've shot in my Savage. I'd say they are in the 15-20lb. loading pressure range (maybe more, never set it on a scale to see for sure).

As far as performance I don't see why I need to go to the all copper Barnes. I killed 2 deer with the SST's this year, both high shoulder shots (at 135 yds and 22 yrds) and both complete pass thrus. 135 yrd deer was a bang-flop and the 22 yrd deer only went about 20 yards after he woke up from the 20 second nap he took when I shot him.

A Barnes Original in an Orange MMP sabot in my Savage is twice as hard to load than the SST in my Ultra Hunter.

And best of all, they aren't $1 each

I think you'll like them. I shoot the 250s in my Savage at 2100fps+. They are accurate and they have performed well for me on deer thus far (last 3 years).

2100fps is on the slow side for smokeless. I believe he's gonna end up in the 2600fps range.

Yes I was aware of that and I realize some people have worries of SSTs fragmenting at top end smokeless less speeds, thus the reason I listed my muzzle velocity so he would know the entire story.

What muzzle velocity was you shooting the SSTs at when you killed these two?

2700ish. The 40 cal SSTs have a thicker jacket than the 45 cals, especially the 250 gr 45s.
