I got to my property today before sunrise and got to the same area I shot my bird last Sunday. I had seen a tom there yesterday on my way out and then saw another in the field on property next to mine, but couldn't get him to leave the hen he was with.

I got set up against the same tree I used last Sunday and waited for the gobbling to start. Well I waited and waited, and nothing. at 6:05 i did a series of tree yelps and I swear I heard a gobble behind me, but couldn't tell with the road noise. I waited till 6:15 and did some more excited yelping and I heard a gobble behind me but it sound like he was on my neighbors property. The birds that I saw yesterday never gobbled, so I was thinking that they may slip in silent, so I didn't want to do a 180 on the tree. I sat there and at 6:25 he gobbled again, but sounded like he was across the power line and in the other block of woods. I called and he doubled gobbled and sounded like he was right behind me on the power line. I eased around and couldn't see him so i was thinking I better spin to my left a bit so I could shoot him. I had my gun on my lap and started to ease around when I caught movement and this dude is 25-30 yds strutting down the power line to my left. I froze and so did he. I thought he saw me it's over, but he kept coming. He went behind some trees and went into strut, but went right back out of it. Somehow I got my gun to my shoulder. There was a small gap between the trees he was behind and one just to my right that I could shoot between. He was acting sketchy so I panicked a bit and decided when he came out from behind the tree, I was going to shoot him. He was taking real cautious steps, so I was ready as soon as he stepped out, but then he took two full steps. I adjusted right to get on his neck and shot and flew away. I was like "what the heck" then I saw the tree.

I went to the other end of my property and called a hen in, and saw 7 deer, so all in all not a bad day in the woods, just wish I'd have got him.

Ouch that sucks. Ive done it in the fall a few years ago, but still killed 4 birds that time, lol. I miss enough I don't need to shoot any trees

The only bird I ever called up at AEDC I did the exact same thing. I remember those hunts more than the ones that I killed birds.
