I went to Academy Sports tonight to check out some rifle scopes. They didn't have too many higher end scopes but I was pleasantly surprised by the clarity and brightness of a Nikon scope. Any love for Nikon? Quite frankly, they didn't have anything close to it.

I'm a Nikon fan. Lots of better scopes but with Ky only having 2 weeks of rifle and 10 days of mz total and me not having to shoot more than 200 yards (most of the time only 50 lol) then i don't see justifiying buying anything better. They are clear and have never let me down.

I'm a Nikon fan as well. Lots of people on here have jumped ship to the vortex scopes. They're good scopes, but a fad imo. I have a Nikon Monarch and spent weeks looking at different scopes at different places before deciding on it. I have a few more $400+ scopes and it is the best imo... Including my vx-iii and elite 4200. I have a p-223 and a buckmaster also. Neither are Monarch quality, but both are excellent for the $.

Not sure what kind of warranty coverage you'd like to have, but Nikon's warranty is a bit lacking. It does not cover accidental damage and it's also not transferable if you were to try and sell the scope. Both Vortex and Bushnell now have a lifetime, transferable, "no questions asked" warranty on most of their scopes and binos. Vortex is definitely not a fad. The company has been around for several years and continues to deliver some of the best customer service in the industry.

This is what I was going on. It's from their website:

Maybe they have different warranties for different scope models? I would take a look at the warranty card in the box and see what it says before you purchase it. You could also call Nikon and ask them what the warranty is on the scope model that you are considering. I'd be interested to hear what you find out. It sounds like they may actually have a very competitive warranty.

Well my personal experience with their warranty not so great.

Seems lifetime to them and lifetime to me is two different things.

After a pair of 20 year old binos failed and needed to be repaired under warranty they told me that the binos had reached end of service life and would be replaced with a pair that only had a 6 month warranty. I explained to them the pair I purchased came with a lifetime warranty and that I expect the product they replace it with to come with a lifetime warranty or fix my binos that had the lifetime warranty in the first place.

Long story short. I got them to replace them with a new pair with the lifetime warranty. I will not be buying Nikon again. I suspect they will just pull the same crap again should I ever need the warranty

I've become a fan of Sightron.
Very clear and bright optics, and a limited lifetime warranty-materials and workmanship.
Put a Big Sky/SII or better grade Sightron up next to anything in the same price range.
You'll be pleasantly surprised.

One of the owners of MidSouth South Shooters Supply told me Sightrons where made in the same factory as Sawarovski's, he can use any scope he wants, but hunts with Sightrons

I have a nikon on my 10/22 I've sent it back twice for repair. I keep it in my truck during the summer for groundhogs so I'm sure the summer heat has everything to do with it. The cross hairs float one day they will be level the next day they will be crooked lol.

I have a Sightron SII Big Sky and it says Made In Japan on the scope. All Swarovski scopes with 1" tubes are assembled in Scranton, Rhode Island from parts manufactured in Austria. The rest of their scopes are made in Austria.

I really like the Sightron except the eye box is a little small.

Supposedly the upper end sightrons have the same glass as Leupolds, I got this from a very reliable source. I have never been a big fan of sightron but I have a buddy who has several and really likes them.

I am not a fan of Nikon and don't any of their scopes now, but 7-8 years back I had 5 Monarchs in different powers. I bought one new off of eBay and mounted it myself. This was one of the first scopes I mounted myself and was really heavy handed. So much so that I torqued down the rings and cracked a lens inside the scope. Yep, too much torqua along with a ring too close to the end of the tube and - CRACK. Anyway, I send it to Nikon, tell them exactly what happened and they told me to send it in. I got it back a couple of weeks later, fixed free of charge and they even replaced the tube I had dented.

Like I said, I don't own any of their stuff now but cannot complain about the service I got.

I own two Nikons and can't say anything bad about them, never had an issue so no reason to upgrade but the last two scopes I bought have been Zeiss.

I am a Nikon fan as well, have 5 of them. Never had an issue with the 2 warranty issues I had. Both times new scopes. 1 was from a savage ml with heavy loads and 1 was an eight plus year scope on my sons 22 that saw some rough handling. I love em they are plenty clear and reasonably priced. My .02

I have 3 Monarchs. They are hard to beat, for the money. Never had any problems, and I like the Spot On program online. I can use it to make simplistic dope charts for the BDC at all power settings. Used this to ring steel at 600yd with my 223. Much cheaper way of doing this, compared to 3 other buddies with $1,800 scopes and ballistics calculator. They might of been a bit more precise, but I could hit every shot and had as much fun as they did.
