Scope rankings according to SWFA:

I would have to say that Meopta got the shaft on that ranking. The Meopta Meostar R1, their highest quality line, is leaps and bounds far superior to the Bushnell Elite 4200, Nikon Monarch, and the Zeiss Conquest. Optically it is right up there with Kahles, Zeiss Victory, and Swarovski. Number 5 is weird as well. Leupold Mark 4, VX-III, and VXL are rated as the same??? One would think the Mark 4 would be superior to the VX-III.

I would like to see an updated test on optics with the use of machines to spit out real numbers to test light transmission, clarity, etc... instead of what somebody thinks is better.
 
The Bushnell Elite 4200 is a piece of shiit. They can not hold a candle to the VX-III. Same goes with the Nikon Monarch. I have had both of these scopes and I will not make that mistake. The Luepolds and Ziess are probally the best for the money.
 
Overall reasonable rankings, gotta remember its not a list of 'what's the best scope made', but rather a weighted list of multiple factors.

Their definition of 'best scope' based on their ranking criteria may be completely different than yours or mine.

For example, the best optical glass is not ranked at the top tier probably because of cost. A $2700 US Optics scope is prohibitive to most of us. Is it a good value? Probably not to the guys making the list, but if you want the best/ most indestructable scope and your life depended on it, It'd be a steal at $2700.

The leupold Mark IV's and VX III's use the same glass. You get the fancy turrets with the Mark IV's which increases their functionality, but you get the cost advantage of the vx III's which makes them rank out similarly.

Honestly I think the B&L 4200's are close to leupys, not quite as good optically, but since they're cheaper, that probably ranks them up a little higher on the list.

I'm not sure about all the scopes on the top 3 tiers, but I think they're all at least a grand.
 
The biggest difference is light gathering, and there is alot of difference to me. I made a believer of Redblood. I was counting points on a deer with a VX-III and he couldn't even see the deer through a 4200. (right at daylight)
 
I really like the Nikons. I really like the Conquests. I am really warming up to Bausch & Lome, quick. I used to be in the golden ring rut myself.
PMC bought a really nice Nikon from me, and I have several Nikon Golds. The last new scope I bought was a Monarch 3.5-10 and put it on the Kimber 17HM2 Varminter. It was so clear, I almost used it on a deer rifle. May still.
 
I haven't used enough different brands in hunting conditions to say what does and doesn't work always. I will however rely upon a few trusted friends who shoot straight and my general rule of thumb "you get what you pay for".

Nikon Prostaff. Ive had it on my .375 H&H and it worked fine, Ive had it on .300 win mags and .325WSM's and its held up fine. Dropped it and all the internals were fine. Id say investing $150 in a prostaff would be a good idea.
 
Just can't bring myself to try a nikon after all the trash they made several years back. Maybe they've improved significantly, but the stuff they made back in the 90's was junk. Kinda surprising too, since they had some of the best camera lenses out for decades.

As far as light gathering ability's go.......Zeiss bar none.

I agree 100% - anyone that has ever put the 3200 up against the Leupold VX-I (much less the VX-II) can only come to one conclusion - they'll put the 3200 back down and purchase the VX-1.
