Needing to scope a 7mm Rem mag. I pulled the Vortex 6.5-20 off of it for another gun. Looking at scopes with a little less magnification. I do prefer a target elevation turret and a simple fine plex reticle. 1" or 30mm tube. 40-50mm obj not set on either at the moment. I'm not sure if all these meet that criteria so plan on calling a few companies tom.

Right now I'm between several...
1. Meopta Meapro 4.5-14x44
2. Swaro Z3 4-12x50
3. Zeiss HD5 3-15x42
4. VX6 3-18x44
5. Bushnell Elite 6500 2.5-16x42

got to admit I do like the idea of the wide range of magn that the Leupy and Bushnell offer. Any experience with any of these scopes? Of course I'm always looking for the best bang for my $$$. Thanks

This is an awesome deal on great scope. Its been marked down to $650.

I went thru this exact same search for the perfect scope and came up with almost the exact same list. I ended up purchasing an open box Zeiss Conquest HD 3-15x50 with the plex reticle and the target turrets for my 300 win mag from CameraLandNY. Its an awesome scope and there is a mail in rebate right now for $150. I thought about the VX6 and the fact that you can get the turrets customized for you gun and ammo for free but then decided I would rather not have a custom turret because I did not want to be restricted to a single bullet/velocity. I can change my loads and run them thru the calculator that Zeiss has on their website and it will recalculate the markings on the turret.

I personally would stay away from the Bushnell. I don't believe their glass is in the same league with the rest of the scope mentioned and their CS dept has gotten a bad reputation.

Yea I've seen those deals in the classifieds. Hesitant because they're not exactly what I'm looking for...fine plex with target turret.

Jim...sounds like you have the exact Zeiss that's on my list. And with the $150 rebate they're offering for the HD5 with plex reticle its hard not to buy a brand new one. How fine is your reticle? You like it overall? The VX6 is still tempting me as well. I believe the way the CDS turret system works is it comes with a standard target turret then you can order for free a customized turret for your specific load. Correct me if Im wrong here please. I'm like you though, I'd rather not be subject to one particular load, but just keep the standard turret. The wide 6x range of the Leupy is appealing to me.

Bushnell may be off my list. I don't think they offer the 6500 with target elevation turret.

The elite 6500 used to come with target turrets but they made it so you have to get the elite tactical if you want target turrets.

Overall, I love the scope. The reticle works for me. Its not super fine. It seems fairly standard but I am not really into super thin or super thick reticles. I have had bad experiences with both usually having to do with the poor quality of the scope itself. Its a fairly compact scope. I almost needed to get some offset rings to mount it. There is no movement back or forth for adjustment. Luckily, it fits me perfect. I would not hesitate to buy another one. I have a Swaro A3 3-10x42 that I have been wanting to do a side by side comparison on but have not had a chance. My guess is that my eyes won't be good enough to tell the difference. As for the VX6, it was not clear to me that you actually got a generic target turret on the scope. The way it looked to me is that you got a standard covered hunting turret and then ordered the cds turret but I could be wrong. As for the rebate, I think you have to buy the scope before the end of November. You may want to check that.

By the way, I have been an optics junky for quite a few years now which has been an expensive habit. I made the mistake of buying a Manners stock for my 300 win mag and now I am a stock junky. I loved it so much, I ordered another one for my 270 a week later. Just a warning in case you get an itch to buy a really nice stock. You will never be able to go back.

I've always thought #5 would make a great deer scope. I almost bought one a while back.
Bushnell in the Elite series makes some great glass no doubt about it. Problem is the tubes and parts they put around them cannot compare to the Leupold, Ziess and Swaroviski counterparts in terms of Dependability, ruggedness and reliability.

If my considerations were on a target rifle or low kicker and the pricing was right I might consider one. On a heavy kicker or something that is going to see some rugged field use?? Not even a consideration IMHO.

Consider Trijicon Accupoints. I have them on all of my rifles. There are better scopes, but for hunting I like these the best overall. I've owned Zeiss, Meopta, Bushnell Elites up to 4200, Leupold etc. Second favorite is a glass etched reticle in a Zeiss.

My little Bushnell disagrees with your assessment.

those 3.5-21 HDMR FFP with G2 reticles are IMO at least as good as the 5.5-22 NF and for unknown range steel plate shooting may be better,,,there is nothing little or weak about that Bushnell right there,,

Mine is a 4.5-30x with H37 reticle, but yeah, they're solid optics.

At least as good as a night Force??

Try posting that on Sniper Hide and see where that gets you :)

Not too shabby for the cheapest scope of the bunch.

For a hunting rifle I love how my 50mm VX-3L hugs the barrels on my rifles. They even have a 30mm tube 56mm obj model that would work pretty well too.

Finally pulled the trigger and went with the Zeiss HD5 3-15 with the plex reticle and locking target turret. Looking forward to getting to the range with it. Mounted on my Tikka m695 7mmRM. Got it shooting the Barnes 150gr TTSX pretty well. In fact a few weeks ago I got my longest kill at 320 yds in MS. Shot through the shoulder...dropped right there. I believe this will be a good match for the gun. Will report back after some range time.

What are your intended ranges that you plan to kill deer at? or what is your goal with this set up?

My goal is to have a "long range" rig that I can tote around. Although it's around 9lbs little heavier than I'd like. I'd like to get proficient out to say 6-700 yds. Something that'll be good for deer up to elk. Planning an elk hunt this year.

Plan to zero at 200 and dial up anything over say 350. Suggestions?

I am not one to say what works for me will work for you and opinions are just that. I asked only get an idea of what you're intentions are.
Post up some pics of your rig cause that really adds to a post when someone is doing something like this.
I would be putting together another long range hunting rifle also but I can cover my intended ranges with what I already have.
Practice , practice and more practice is what comes to mind, just like DA said.
Good luck with your set up.

This is the exact scope I had on my rifle when I elk hunted this year and I feel like it is the perfect scope for what you described. I really like the 3 power on the lower end and having 15 at the high end is nice even though 10 is sufficient out to 5 or 600 yards. It is really hard to go wrong with this scope as you will not get much lower on the low end of the power range and have no need for more than 15 on the upper range for hunting purposes.
