tell me if this is correct. gun was shooting 3 " high @ 100 yards. scope has a 1/4 click. do I need to bring it down 2 clicks to get it 2 1/2 high at 100 yards? !!!! yes or no? I think I missed 2 deer due to it being an under 80 yard shot. I put the cross hairs dead in the lung / heart kill zone.Would this mean the bullet went under the deer?

That depends on how well your scope tracks and how your rifle shoots. I would always check at the range how much each click will move the point of impact. I have seen some rifles shoot to the right and to the left after the scope (Simmons and Bushnell) has been adjusted for vertical POI.

if you aimed in the center on the vitals you are looking at 7-8 inches play for both high and low. I doubt your miss was caused by it being 3 inches high.

I too would have to agree, .270 is a pretty flat shooter. The lack of hair or blood does not always indicate a miss, it simply indicates a lack of sign of a hit.

Two clicks down won't help if missing the deer at 80 yards. There's either some other problem or shooter error. We all hate to admit it but shooter error does occur. Also be sure and try some shots with the rifle hand held after zeroing off the bags. I always use the my hand off the bench and then also try steadying my front hand on one of the range pole supports while standing. If the point of impact is the same as off the bench then you're good to go. Sometimes unusual things cause misses. I searched for a deer for two hours with no sign one time (shot with 270 Win incidentally) before climbing back into my stand and spotting a small limb clipped in two a few feet from my stand. Things happen and limbs can just jump right in front of you. Your zero should be fine at three inches up if you anticipate long range shots on occasion but you might want to drop it down a little if all your shots will be a close range.

I think another thing to consider is path of the bullet vs. sight picture. Check your ballistics tables for the caliber and rifle you are shooting. 3" high at 100 yards seems high. I sight my '06 in 2 inches high at a hundred and hold dead center for every distance out to 300 yards. The 270 shoots flatter than my '06 in similar rifles. Also, if you sight your rifle in from a bench and shoot deer from a stand, uphill shot or downhill shot, your trajectory will be effected. Sounds like you need to spend more time at the range. And shoot from your stand if you use one. Make sure your scope mounts are tight. Good luck.
