In the manual, the factory seems to be in bed with Hornady XTP bullets. Namely 250 gr and 300gr.

They do recommend that Barnes bullet. It seems longer, I guess due to copper's density being less than lead, the bullet comes out longer to make up a 300 gr. ??? is that correct?

Okay my real questions:

Does the Savage tight twist ONLY shoot those long 'cucumber' shaped bullets?

I was wanting to try some .452 diameter 200gr FTX and some 452 diameter 225 FTX Hornady bullets. But they are 'short' and I don't know if it's a waste of effort to even see if they will shoot good in that twist.

What say anyone out there???

Also, is the Hornady SST 'muzzleloader' bullets the same as the Hornady FTX flex tip bullets. They both have them tips on them, wonder why they are designated different? If you can help on this question too, thanks.

If you have had success with the shorter bullets, are you using a different powder for these?

Another question: if you're working with slower burning smokeless powders, can you sneak away from the HHP12 and HHP24 high pressure sabots? I was wanting to try an MMP .40/50 sabot on some .40cal XTP but don't know if I could get away with it without blowing a 'gasket' and having a misfire.

thanks, I'm a new puppy to the Savage10ml

If you want to shoot long range, the the bc of .458 the Barnes is the best (recoil is the highest too).

If you want to shoot to 300 yards, the 250 SST is all you need.

Don't bother with bullets less than .452 in diameter - they won't work.

BTDT.

No need to re-invent the wheel-

oh, hey Judd, you must have Savage ESP..

I added to that post about a .40/50 sabot...please riddle me that one sir

thanks

okay so you like the Barnes .458 300gr

and the 250gr SST (is that one .452 or .458)

I would presume MMP has a sabot for the .458 ???

or is just an extra hard push to get it in there vs a .452??

There is a fellow on Doug's board named RB he is the Master.

His rule is that in a saboted bullet, more than 1/2 bullet diameter less will not shoot (ie:.452 -.400 = .048)

Above is from memory only - you will have to go to Doug's site and look it up to be sure.

I do know that .40 caliber bullets in .50 sabots (Dead Center or others) WILL NOT work.

I tried, and failed.

Others, smarter that me, did also.

Ok, thanks man.

I guess I'll stay with the bigger bullets. I was just thinking against shooting bullets the size of Volkswagens (300gr)

It's a stigma I've got to get over. I've always been anti fat, slow non aerodynamic bullet.

is there a Barnes bullet in that 250gr range you like?

is a full skirt flat base bullet better than a boattail in those sabots?

thanks gentleman, that sounds great.

I'm not an accuracy geek. I'm just going for simplicity until I get her good and broken-in.

LeathrLungz-
I have seen no reason yet to change form this IMR-SR 4759 Lee Dipper 4.3 Barnes 245 gr Spit-Fire with an MMP Sub-Base under it set off by a Win Standard 209 ,But I also haven't tried as much as some here in mine.
