What's y'all's thoughts on the new line out by savage? Straight pull action with ball bearings seems interesting to me..... as of now not a good interesting. I have a savage 116 weather warrior and I love it so I know savage quality is top notch..... just not sure of the straight pull action. It seems like a cool thought, but are the bearings just something else that can go bad?

I quickly read over a short article on it yesterday but didnt pay real close attention. Cool looking rifles.

Browning had what they called T Bolt 22s probably 50 years ago. Bought on and actually carried it into my college dorm to show it off. Absolutely beautiful and worked like a charm. Of course it was a smaller scale but I bet it will work for centerfire also.

Interesting. Reminds me of a quick disconnect fitting on an air hose. I have a Calico 9mm carbine that uses twin rollers on the sides of the square bolt for the locking mechanism and it works reliably enough. I never shot it more than maybe 1,500 times though before I put it away because of magazine issues/availability so can't comment on heavy use reliability. If my memory is right, I think I read that Calico used a variation of a design already used by H&K.

I wonder how well this design would work dirty. Would the balls start to stick in the "Out" position and make it hard to pull the bolt? For ergonomics I'd think you'd have to really practice a lot with this design to overcome the standard operation of a bolt rifle if you'd shot mostly bolt guns for years. I know that when I went from shooting almost exclusively pump shotguns to a side by side double, I couldn't make that thing fire twice to save my life. Every time a dove would swoop past me and I needed 2 shots real fast, I'd nearly throw my shoulder out trying to pump the forearm backward. My subconscious couldn't accept that a shotgun could be ready to fire again without me pumping that slide back and forth.

If somebody got good with this design though it would sure allow fast follow up shots for dangerous game.

Looks like you'd lose the camming action of the angled locking lugs for extracting a sticky case or chambering a round that is a bit long.

I wonder what mechanism it has to prevent firing before the balls lock the bolt completely. A normal bolt body has to rotate all the way around completely engaging the lugs before the slot in the bottom of the bolt body will allow the striker to move forward. Surely this design has some way to prevent firing in the event those balls aren't fully thrust outward and engaged with the receiver.

I can't help but be nervous with this aspect of the design and what effect dirt will have on it. The fear of having a bolt thrust through my head driven by 55,000 psi gas is not conducive to good shooting. :)

Yikes!

Cool until you need camming of a turn bolt to get a stuck case out of the chamber.

Looks good to me...lots of features...several high end Euro rifle makers have offered similar straight pull actioned rifles for years...a regular m77, m700, or m70 will kill game just as dead at a third to half the price but I am interested especially if the barrel/bolt head caliber changes aren't excessively pricy...say a 22/250, 6.5cm, .358win...or similar combinations...

Actually,I doan think you would ever know if such a malfunction occurred. You would be getting a trigger squeeze and then you'd be listening to St. Peter telling you about entrance rules. 😱
