Do any of you shooters use Vihtavuori N-120 ?

I cannot find any and would like to try some for 300gr bullets. I understand it is easier on sabots.

I talked with MidSouthShooters today (they do not carry N120) but said if a few folks would ask more often they'd try to work something out with Lapua who has the distributorship rights.

Just wondering if there is a similar easier burning double based powder that can be substituted or would like to help me campaign MidSouth to get some in. :)

* I got some N110 there today for some 250gr loads. Funny thing is they say they get their VV N110 from Hodgdon distributor

The load I like is 44grs of 4759 and 250gr XTPs with short MMP sabot. Shoots sub moa. one of the first loads I tried in my savage was N110 and 300gr XTPs, If you like bone jarring recoil the 300 grs are the way to go, Not for me

N120 has been my most consistant powder. I use 60gns w/ 300 sst's (took a doe @ 281 yds) I use 300 exps when it's thick. They will flat out dirt roll em.
it was hard to find but I found a guy on dougs board who bought bulk and and he sold me 2lbs.

fullstream, what sabots do you prefer with that load?

and, are your 300gr bullets, .458 or .452 diameters????

thanks

For 300 grain bullets, it was my experience that slow powders (H-322, Alliant 10x, and lastly H-4198) did their best with the .458 Barnes with orange sabot.

That's a rifle bullet with a rifle bc (around .291 if I remember right; for reference my .40 @ 2,950 is only .265)

If you're going to shoot 300 or less, shoot the 250SST and be done. Less hurt on the shoulder and that bullet will get it done to at least 326. :)

One could EASILY push the 250 SST to 2,700+.

Plug that # in with a .210 bc and compare each to 300-

Betcha shoot the 250...

okay Judd, if with the 250gr bullet which Sabot MMP shorties or Harvester CR

I already bought 2 boxes of 250gr XTP- all I could find in stock at Midsouth-would you still use a spinner jag on them XTP bullets?

btw, I got N110 for the 250gr load trials

Sabots are funny. My gun (now DA's) liked the MMP and the SST supplied sabot. Yours may like the supplied sabot with the sst (I believe its a Hornady HP) or the Harvester crush rib.

Sort of have to shoot and see.

See if the bullet fits well in the jag - that's all that matters.

You will love the 110 - wish I could find more around Knoxville -

I need it as a booster for the .40 and I'm all out.

thanks

for the sst's I use mmp's that I trim w/ a finger nail clipper
and the barnes I use the supplied sabot

OK, with the two posts below..........I see a huge difference in the powder charges. Is this because of the difference in brands of powder or something I am missing.

I just purchased a ML 10-II and I too am absorbing the info. here, but dang I don't want to blow up my gun and myself with an over charge. It just seems like a big diff.

Different burn rates. One can actually shoot quite a lot of powder and still be at low pressure if you know what you're doing.

I have shot up 92 grains out of the .40 at less pressure than 43 gr of SR-4759 (but with speed just shy of 3,000 fps).

Check out Doug's Board under helpful links and look at the pressure trace curves RB developed.

http://dougva.proboards.com/index.cgi?b ... hread=2368

That's one for N133 and a 250sst. @ 79 grains, pressure is around 25,000 psi. The factory load of 43 grains SR-4759 shoots to 35,000 psi for reference.

If you'll notice with the loads that shoot to speed, they all spend more time under the curve than the fast powder loads (ie:5744, 4759, N110).

Another helpful resource:

Hope this helps-

Starting out, just shoot loads that are on Doug's page or factory loads.

Keep your loads less than 40,000 psi and you'll be fine. I think the sabot will blow around that level anyway.

Good luck-

I have been shooting AA 5744 out of mine for the past 10 years. Nothing but good results. I am using MMP high pressure sabots and Hornady 250 grain XTPs.

I should also add that the Hornady sabots DO NOT work for this load, at least out of my gun.

I second the 5744, it is double based. You may loose a few fps, but it always goes boom when you want it to. I pair mine with 300 gr MZ Expanders.

I have been using one for 6 years and love it,one thing I'm not seeing on here is the fact that the manufacture also recomends certain sabots as well as powders be careful.

I think you'll be impressed with Reloader 7 as well. 65 grains does wonders out of my gun.

I just bought some recently and weighed out some 65gr. charges like you recommend but haven't gotten to the range what with the cold weather. I'm going to try it with some 300 Barnes originals and see what happens. I understand it was originally one of the recommended powders by Savage.

That's my understanding too. They say it shines with the heavier bullets, but I really don't need a 300 gr bullet for deer, nor the extra recoil, and Barnes, while a great bullet, are just a little too rich for my blood. The SSTs and Shockwaves have done well by me. I tried loads of R7 from 60 gr to 67 gr and the 65gr load just did it. It may sound crazy, but it just felt better when I shot it too. This maybe a purely mental thing though. Good luck.

In any load, I think consistency is the key. IE, same pressure when seating the bullet, swab or no swab between shots, etc.
