savage build

I was under the impression that the .270 was fast and flat lol. But if you must change, since you have a long action there is no reason in going to a short action cartridge. Your desired barrel length is the limiting factor to anything faster than the .308 family of cartridges. If I was changing I would go a 6.5x284 but no shorter than a 24 inch barrel. Stay away from the wildcats until you progress in your reloading abilities.

How about this. A good way to ease into wildcats with little fuss and bother is with one of the Ackley Improved cartridges. Since your rifle was a 270Winchester before, the 270 Ackley might be something you would be interested in. It'll give you another 150 or so fps plus it has the practical advantage over most wildcats in that standard 270 Winchester ammo can be used in it in a pinch.

Just did a similar build with an old savage 110 long action. I changed it over to 6.5x55. Great caliber, holds more powder than the creedmore (Velocity) and has been taking game as large as moose for decades. You can buy factory ammo from a many manufactures till you get your reloader together. Shoots flat and has great sectional density. The 6.5 creedmore is a great round but it is a short action . The 6.5 x 55 is considered a medium size cartridge so it will feed well in a long action. My 30-06 bolt head fits the 6.5x55, the 270 bolt head you have will fit as well. Just my 2 cents.

Great choice... What velocity are you getting or are you just reloading for accuracy only.

Barrel life is what everyone says is an issue. I think if someone shoots a lot for fun or even competition it might become a factor. I have a 6.5-284 and a 300 weatherby and I would be shocked if my unborn children need to rebarrel them.

260, 6.5x47, 6.5-06. A 260 in a long action loaded with 105 VLD's all the way to the lands would be cool and there would be no mag box issues with a long action.
