Planning on getting my son his first deer rifle. He is getting ready to turn 8. I have been looking at the youth models of the Ruger American and the Savage Axis. I'm planning on .243 caliber. I'm kind of leaning towards the Ruger but I wanted to get some input from you guys. So, what do you think?

The Savage Axis 2 is 1 moa from the factory supposedly that peaked my interest. It's still to big for my small framed son thiugh

I have a Savage Axis in 7mm08.

The trigger is maybe 9 pounds. One of, if not the worst, I have ever owned.

The factory Axis stock flexes. The fore end barrel channel will appear to be bending when you are squeezing the trigger. Because you have a firm hold on the fore end and the trigger is requiring a Herculean pull, the stock flexes at the pivot point-your hand-on the fore end. The recoil is astoundingly high.

There is an Axis II that supposedly has a decent trigger and the stock has been strengthened. I would be extremely cautious in believing those stories.

The rifle is, however, Savage accurate. MOA with Nosler book loads for 140 and 120 grain bullets. Chamber is tight. Action is not smooth but it is at least on par with the genre.

I have restocked the rifle and done a bit of very minor trigger-work to get things into the realm of reality.

If the trigger is good and the stock flex is gone, I'd go with the Axis II, never an Axis I. You can make the youth stock an adult stock for right around 100.00

The Ruger is reportedly a very good rifle. Trigger, stock, accuracy.

I really like the Savage accuracy.

My nephew bought an Axis and it doesn't group worth a dern. Hopefully it will with a better stock.

I like Savages and I own three of them but not the Axis. I bought an Axis and tried several loads in it but I was never satisfied with it so I sent it down the road. I bought a Ruger American compact in .308 last year and I love it. It shoots as good as any of my factory rifles if not better. It has an aluminum bedding block, good trigger pull, and a smooth bolt. It will consistently shoot 1/2" groups at 100yds off sand bags. I think it's better made than my savage model 10s. I plan on buying one for each of my three kids.

My uncle bought the Ruger last summer in .308 and it is a shooter with a good trigger to boot. He has had nothing but good to say about it thus far.

Just something to consider: I'd recommend teaching him to shoot with his dominant eye over the barrel. Hopefully he's right eye dominant but a lot of right-handed folks are left eye dominant and vice versa. Just something to consider coming from someone that had to learn how to shoot all over again to become a decent wing shot. By the way though, I noticed that Ruger is now making a left handed American rifle.

This is what I have and treat it rough and it has not let me down yet

was it an axis 2 or regular axis or xp?

I've heard good reports from the Ruger rifles. I do have one Savage Axis in 22-250, and it's a great shooter with factory ammo, haven't even gotten started with reloads yet.

Bought an Axis youth package in .243 for my son. I think it is just fine. Shoots MOA with factory loads and a little better with hand loads. Trigger is kinda strong but, its a kids hunting rifle. Wouldn't want it to be 2# pull. I also have a 10 and a 16, both shoot less than 1/2" with hand loads.

Axis 2 but it doesn't matter. Only difference is that it has the accutrigger. On another note, my son isn't satisfied with groups from his Savage 110 in .270. He's tried various factory ammo and at best groups are about 2" across. Other folks and reviews of the gun report much better accuracy, though. Wish I knew what could help my son's gun.

I'm not throwing off on any gun maker. Like I said I have Savage rifles, along with Remington, Winchester, Ruger, & Browning but you can go buy two identical guns today and have one that'll drive tacks and one that's not fit for nothing but a boat anchor.

I love Savage rifles, well except for the Axis. I've never laid hands on the newer version of the Axis so I cant speculate on those. I've never heard anything but praise for the. Ruger American rifle. If I were in the market for a new budget rifle, that's what I would pick.

Im pee'ved to hear that Tbone. I had a discussion about taurus with a gentleman a few days ago and he said "Taurus has the ability to make good guns but they don't always. Sig Sauer though they check every part overtime." It sounds like the savage guns have the same problems. I have heard a lot of good reports on savage rifles but it soundalike there are some problem guns out here. Have you contacted savage about the problem?

Not yet. Guess I need to. It's pretty common for the Axis not to group due to the cheap stock, but you'll rarely hear anything negative out of the better Savages. But it is what it is. Ruger just started selling the American in left-handed, but last year I bought my son what was probably the only left-handed deer rifle in middle Tn at the time, the Savage 110 combo with scope. It wasn't cheap, either. Just wish it shot like my Marlin.35 Rem. It's a short range gun, but with long range accuracy.
