About 1/2 hour before sundown yesterday I had 3 does and a couple of fawns in the back yard. Then out popped what looked to be about 115" 8 pointer. I'm guessing he was 3.5 years old. He got hot on the heels of one of the does and stayed after that individual doe the entire time I watched. He was grunting just like a rutting buck after a doe in mid November. Probably nothing to it but I found it interesting this early in the year.

Just drove home and there were over 30 deer in the fields along my road. My wife noticed a nice buck dogging a doe so we stopped and watched. His neck was outstretched and he was grunting like it was November all the while dog trotting the doe around the field!

What sort of makes this so unusual is that the buck was in full velvet. I know there are a few does bred 1-2 months earlier than in our more typical rut frame so I guess some bucks are able to breed before shedding occurs.

maybe he's about to lose the velvet and the testosterone has kicked in

My thoughts exactly, little surge of juice and he's feeling it.

two of my mature bucks have shed in the past week and have completely changed their pattern. No more daylight pics and completely switched which part of the property they are hanging on.

It's that time of year.

It is that time and it's about time!!! I say that because I've only been able to pick up four 2.5 - 4.5 yo bucks on 640 acres running 11 cameras. Worst summer camera season by far I've experienced since I started running them. Lots of does and fawns running around, so things will change soon. Can't wait to meet the newcomers.
