After missing a easy shot on Sunday i connected with this little buck on Thursday morning. He was chasing a doe but the doe went over the ridge and he provided a perfect broadside shot at 40yds. The ball struck the mark and ended up just under the skin on the off shoulder. The buck made it 20yds before dropping about ten yds from my stand. Surprisingly, there was no blood for the first 10yds of his track and the trail was light except for the last few yds. I always follow the trail for tracking practice. If you pull the trigger and don't see any blood in the first few yards keep looking. I punched a .490in hole in him without a drop of blood for 10yds.

Cabelas 50 cal flintlock shooting 70gr FFG (real powder) .010in patch and .490 ball.

First of all Congratulations on the Flintlock Kill.. The only way to hunt in my opinion... And it is not at uncommon not to find a Blood Trail right off the bat when hunting with Round Balls.. Matter of fact i have had more times when the trail started 15-25 yards from Point of Impact then i did right at Impact site..About the only time i have ever gotten Blood right away is with a Heart shot.. or a Main artery Shot..Then they pour it out...

From one old flintlock shooter to another, it it gives me great satisfaction to see a young fellow like you with enough gumption to take up a flinter( with a round ball too!) and go harvest a deer. Not as hard as supposed by many on this sight. Just requires knowing your flint's limitations, practice, and a little patience. Keep it up!!
