I am new to the muzzle loading thing so I have some questions.

I went to basspro yesterday to look at some rifles and to get some info on them. I dont have loads of money so the guy showed me a Traditions rifle that was selling for $220. Then he showed me a scope by Redfield for $169.

My first questions is: Do you think it would be worth the money to buy the Traditions rifle?
Second, Do I have to have a scope on it? My longest shot would be 60 yds. Is it something just to be more precise or do you absolutly have to have one on there?

I am a newb once again and just wondering if I should drop the money on a muzzle loader or on a center fire rifle.

For $200 i'd check out either the CVA Wolf or CVA Optima. Superb triggers on that Optima as well as real stainless steel barrel.

Id say you could definatly get away with no scope if your max shot is 60 yards. Id put what Im saving towards a good rifle, and get a scope later on down the road when you got the $$$.

X2 do not buy a cheap scope you go in the woods on a cold damp morning it will fog up on you. Make sure it is fog proof and water proof. Go to the store and look threw them you want a good eye relief that works for you. Take your time and check out the reviews on them, hope this help.

I would put the money for the scope towards the muzzleloader. Especially if you are not going to shoot past 60 yrds. Buy you a good scope next year. Get you a quality rifle first. A little at a time. You will appreciate it more in the long run.

I shoot iron sights an try to keep my shots pretty close, which isn't hard to do in the woods.

Check the classified ads out. I've seen some pretty good deals on muzzle loaders there.

Folks been shooting muzzleloaders without scopes for a few hundred years and did alright.
FrontierGander mentioned a CVA Optima...that would do you just fine. Doesn't have to be stainless.
