I am playing with the idea of starting squirrel hunting...never done it before. Figure it will get me in the woods outside of deer season.

My question:
I have an 18-24mo old feist who has never been anything other than a lap dog. Is it to late for her to pick up hunting?
If I take her out, what should I look for. She is good at stalking birds in the back yard. Has a very mello temperment.

Take her too the woods and see what happens.....if she smells around the trees and gets away from you and pays attention to her surroundings then maybe.....

Feist generally use their eyes more then their noise.

go to sqdog.com and check out their forums for tips and tricks....

Finally got her out in the woods today. Went out late so not a lot of activity. She never got more than 50 feet away and didnt make a sound. Dont think she has the drive for squirrels.

Did come accross a small pong and she did a dang good job of flushing frogs....

At this time, think she will be a better lap dog than squirrel dog. Will try to get her out one more time early in the morning.

kill a few and rub them in her nose, play with her with the squirrels. And next time she see's or smells her toy she'll be wanting to play ;)

way to early as well. Wait until the leaves are off and the squirrels are on the ground. You will know for sure when a squirrel runs in front of the dog, if it chases it or not...

i tell you what.....had a few sq dogs when i was little...just got a 2yr old mtn fiest the other day i plan on checking out this weekend...the best one my dad ever had got trained by sniffing a wounded sq when it fell out the tree...the sq bit the pups nose and a world class sq dog was created right then and there...kill you a squirrell give the dog the guts and the hide..have the wife fry it up with some gravy and dumplins..then both problems are solved! the dog will be a sq hater and the wife a sq lover
